Dear bigmax,
Rembrandt van Rijn's "De Omval" (The Omval) is, to be exact, not a
painting but an etching. Though Rembrandt is most famous as a painter,
he was also a highly graphic artist and printmaker. As such, he made
about 300 etchings.
"De Omval" dates from 1645. It is an etching with drypoint, printed on
paper, size about 18 x 23 cm (7.0 x 9.0 inches).
It depicts a view of the slip of land called "De Omval" between the
Ringvaart canal and Amstel River near Amsterdam. Rembrandt divided his
composition into two planes. The distant landscape in the background
is an imagined group of buildings on the Ringvaart canal. In the
foreground at left, two lovers crouch amorously in the shade of a
gnarled tree. Rembrandt indicated the distance between foreground and
background by varying line quality and detail. Open, etched lines
define the more distant canal, while the nearer trees and shrubs
contain more closely drawn lines and drypoint additions that suggest
soft and rich shadows. This landscape falls within the tradition of
17th-century Dutch landscapes with its low, flat horizon and focus on
a local (rather than foreign) subject.
Two versions of "De Omval" exist, since Rembrandt revised the printing
plate after a while. However, the two states are almost identical
except that in the second, a person's hat is made a bit smaller.
Original prints of Rembrandt's etching "De Omval" can be found in
various art collections all around the world, some of which are listed
