Hi Mojo111!
Jesse James was the real American outlaw whose friends felt "Dingus"
was the perfect nickname for him.

?In 1861, Jesse?s brother Frank left home to fight for the rebel
cause. Jesse wanted to join him, but it wasn?t until 1863 when he
joined Quantrill?s raiders. Quantrill didn?t really want him, but
?Bloody? Bill Anderson took Jesse under his wing. Somehow Jesse
acquired the nickname of Dingus.?

"Within the span of two years Jesse had joined his brother in the
Quantrill band, to be under the guidance of famous figures such as,
William Quantrill and ?Bloody? Bill Anderson. The Quantrill band
attacked Union supply trains and depots. During his association with
the Quantrill gang Jesse acquired the nickname of ?Dingus?, thanks to
his youthful smooth girlish face."

From the Crime Library:
?Jesse James was, naturally, well liked by his peers, for both his
bravery and his easy-going manner (that is, when not enraged at the
sight of a blue tunic). One evening, when cleaning his Remington
revolver around a campfire, the handgun accidentally discharged
blowing off a tip of one of his fingers. He coolly studied the damage,
never winced, but only shook his head. "Now ain't that the most
dingus-dangest thing you ever seen?" he replied, drawing laughter from
those around him and inspiring Cole Younger and others from then on to
nickname him "Dingus" in fond memory of the burlesque.?
