Question ID: 27548
Hi,
I'm looking for a specific recording of Danse Macabre.

I have a short clip of it.
Grab it here:
http://supercollider.dyndns.org/danse%20macabre%20(short-clip).mp3

I want to find the full mp3 of this specific recording.
Note the quality of the instruments, and the punchiness of the bass
drum.

I asked this on rec.music.classical before. See:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&safe=off&frame=right&th=72128fee687d5fe5&seekm=61cb689e.0206042204.f7d995%40posting.google.com#link1

Thanks very much!

Even if the recording details cannot be found, I will be satisfied
with a pointer to where the full mp3 is available.
Thanks!

would you settle for a midi file instead of an mp3?

Clarification of Question by qazzaq-ga on 19 Jun 2002 08:42 PDT
Hi nealc,
$5 for the midi? I'm afraid not.
I'm looking for the specific performance of Danse Macabre from which
the short clip came from.
Thanks all.

The URL to the short clip I gave was messed up by google. You had to
manually fill in the missing ").mp3".

For convenience, this will also work:
http://supercollider.dyndns.org/danse_macabre_short-clip.mp3
Alternatively:

I quite like the Orlando Philharmonic's recording, on their 1999
"Fright Night" album.

Sorry, actually called 'fright classics' -- here it is on Amazon.com:

Another quite good one with some ooomph to the percussion is Franz Liszt's.

This might not be of any help, but I thought I'd let you know anyway:

I listened to the clip, and think I own it on CD. Unfortunately, all
my CDs are in the US, while I am in the UK. I did look it up in a CD
list on my computer, and have a few details about the album
(unfortunately, not the important details like which orchestra,
publisher, date, record label, etc.). Anyway, here's what I have:

The CD is disc 1 from Set II of a 6 CD set (3 CDs in 'Set I' and 3 CDs
in 'Set II'). The whole 6 CD set is called 'The Classical Collection'
(pretty generic, I know; and NO, it's NOT the Vanessa Mae set). Disc
1 of Set II is subtitled 'Music of Places'. The songs on 'Music of
Places' are as follows:

1. Grieg: 'Peer Gynt, Morning'
2. Brahms: 'Academic Festival Overture'
3. Dvorak: 'Carnival Overture'
4. John Strauss, Jr.: 'Emperor Waltz'
5. Bizet: 'Carmen, Prelude'
6. Tarrega: 'Capricho Arabe'
7. Albeniz: 'Asturias (Leyenda)
8. Saint Saens: 'Danse Macabre'
9. Saint Saens: 'Carnival of the Animals, Swan'
10. Dukas: 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'

The set could easily be 10 years old (from the mid-90's). I received
it as a gift, and it might even have been used before I received it.

I know this is very sketchy information, and without the actual album,
I can't even tell you if it's the exact same recording. I did some
web searching, and couldn't find any information about it, but maybe
someone else can. If you do find the set, I recommend purchasing it.
The whole set is well-put-together and contains a good group of
recordings.

That is not a MIDI recording. That is from the The Cincinatti Pops
Orchestra recording "Chiller" on Telarc records #0189. Listen to the
samples from that CD, and you will agree.

Hi chuchudda-ga,
You mentioned that there were samples I could listen to. Do you know
where? I see the listing at Telarc:
http://www.telarc.com/gscripts/title.asp?gsku=0189&mscssid=BU7G86WGQKSR2PA70G05AFURQWHCDSC1
But I don't see any links to samples.
If I agree from hearing the samples, I will obtain the CD and you will
have answered my question fully (and get the $5! haha).
Thanks!
Subject: I'm just ordered the Chiller CD

Hi chuchudda-ga,
Thanks anyway.
I found samples of Chiller at cdnow, and I do hear similarities, (the
samples do not cover the small part that I have.)
But I found it cheap at half.com so I just ordered it anyway. If it
turns out to be correct, you'll have answered my question.
