I am searching for a book that i owned as a child, but i do not know
the name of it or the author. All I can remember is that it begins
"This is a tale of long ago, when all the world was white was snow,
and children all sit down to write, to santa claus this christmas
night, and send to him by fairy post, a list of toys they long for
most" Can you helpt me to find this book for my two sons please?

This is a very challenging question because there have been so many
children's books about Christmas and Santa Claus.

Do you remember anything else about the book? Any details from the plot?

In what year (approximately) did you first obtain this book?

I had this book in the early 70's. I can remember later in the book
it visited Santa's workshop, he was getting ready for christmas "so
much to do, so little time, before the bells of christmas chime"

That is just about all i can remember about the book apart from it was
A4 in size and illustrated.

I hope this is of some help.

<I couldn't find the book, but I cam across the poem 'No Sign of
Santa' by William Wise that contains some of the elements you mention.
