Question ID: 275585
I'm building a computer using an MSI 651M-L motherboard. I purchased
two sticks of Kingston KVR333X64C25/256 memory. This is 256mb @333Hz
PC2700 DIMM CL2.5. Kingstons web site reccomended this memory I
purchased from newegg.com & the mb specs call for it. I can get either
stick to work in either slot. It's picky, I often get that long single
beep, but after reseating it a time or two it works great & the
computer boots & works fine. I cannot get both sticks to work together
though either works separately. Why won't they work together & why so
difficult to seat properly? An email to Kingstons support has not
brought a response.

Seems like it should work. The only thing I can think of is,
do you have ECC disabled in your BIOS? Your motherboard won't
support it, and that might be having an effect. You might
browse through your other BIOS settings as well, though,
offhand, I can't think what other settings might make a
difference.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. ECC is not disabled.
I have been through the manual up & down. Can't think of anything but
bad memory. But if that is the case why will it work separate but not
together? Could the board be malfunctioning. This baffles me.

According to this summary of your motherboard:

"Main Memory: Supports two memory banks using two 184-pin
unbuffered DDR200/266/333 DIMM. Supports up to 2GB memory
 size. No support ECC Function."
http://www.directron.com/651ml.html

So, what I'm saying is that ECC *should* be disabled in the
BIOS. Try disabling it, and see if that makes a difference.

Perhaps I misunderstood you before. My apologies, I'm getting bleary
eyed w/this thing. I have tried it both ways & still the same. Both
sticks will not work together but one will alone w/a little prompting.

Hi,

Can you please try lowering the memory timings (i.e. increasing CAS, RAS, etc.)?
Also if you run them both together at 266MHz, does it work?

Thanks.

I'm not sure where to do this, endo-ga. Would you please give me an idea?
Thanks much.

Hi,

I am referring to BIOS settings.

To change them go to:
Advanced Chipset Features->Advanced DRAM Control 1
And please change System Performance to Normal Mode or Safe Mode and
see if you have any luck that way. Please let me know what happens. If
you need any more information please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks.

Nope. Doesn't help. Either stick will work by itself. But they will
not work together. When both sticks are in it won't even boot. Just
that long single repeated beep. Should I give in & replace the memory?
Could it be the board instead?

Just to make sure, you set it to safe mode first, with one stick in
place, then put the 2 sticks together?

In the BIOS under Frequency/Voltage control, try lowering the DRAM
Frequency and see if that works.

If that still doesn't work, then you could try 2 sticks from someone
else and see if that works. If that doesn't work, you can assume that
something is broken on the motherboard.

Thanks.

Yes, all is done as you say. Same deal. One stick after adjustment.
Both sticks together no way at all. I give up. Which would you send
back, mb or memory or all?
Thanks a lot,
Ed

If you could borrow some RAM from someone else and try that, or test
your RAM in another motherboard, it would narrow it down. You could
ask Newegg to exchange the 2 sticks of 256mb for a single 512mb DIMM.
It also depends where you got the motherboard from and how easy it
would be to replace it.

Sorry, can't really give a definite answer. Got 2 last chance
suggestions though. You could try loading fail safe defaults from the
BIOS, and/or updating the BIOS to the latest version.

Thanks.

Thanks for your help. However, I determined the mb was faulty & indeed
upon replacement all went well.
Stay tuned to this channel as there will be more puter questions
coming:~ ) Hopefully ones that center more on abilities, as in my lack
of, & not faulty product.

Thebookguy --

There are so many possible things that could be wrong with the DDR
memory that my recommendation would be to return the two memory sticks
for replacement. Among the possible problems:
*  defective connectors
* problems with the speed of memory components
*  improper setup
*  problems in firmware

Best regards,

Let me make sure all know who are gracious enough to offer help. When
both the memory sticks are in the puter will not boot. Only scream at
me w/that long beep.
