Someone sent me an email dated 23 years in the future. This is really
cool - it means it is always at the top of my inbox. How did he do
it? I tried setting my PC clock and it didn't work (but then I was
using a webmail service).

Thank you, spurious, that's very nice of you.

Hi spurious,

You answered your own question. Email sent from your PC (not web mail)
will pick up any date you have set - I just confirmed that to be sure,
by sending myself an email with the year 2006.

Cheers,
hummer

Please don't do this, I manage mail servers and I'm sick of hearing
from users about this problem. Users tend to freak out about
incorrect time stamps on emails.

You've got to love the humans who are behind in time by a day or what
ever. There always bitching about people not responding to their
emails. :)

Sometimes I get an e-mail that has a bad timestamp. If it's off by a
few minutes, I don't care. But since I keep the majority of my e-mails
and I have my e-mailboxes sorted by date, if an e-mail's time or date
is off by a lot, it'll screw up the sorting.

My e-mail application, Eudora Pro/Mac v4.2, lets me change the
timestamp after a message has arrived. I turn on the option that lets
me change the text of the message (even one I didn't write), and I
type in a good date in the e-mail's header. Then I close the e-mail's
window, and I'm asked if I want to keep the change I made. I click
yes, and voila, the timestamp is fixed.

This wouldn't work on a web-based system, I would guess (though I've
never tried). I don't have enough experience with Outlook Express to
know if that application would allow this fix.
