I am looking for the complete reference for a paragraph that was
quoted in a GMAT exam. It is from a piece of work (could be a
complete book or an essay) that was referenced in a GMAT exam (I want
to say it was from the actual exam I took in Jan 2003, but it possibly
was from a practice exam while i was preparing for it).
The exam questions were based from two separate block of quotes which
were from different sources. The first block of quotes was from
Machiavelli's "The Prince" and I forgot what the quote was about, but
it had to do with something about how to rule.
The second block of quote is what really intrigued me. I was too busy
trying to finish the exam, but the quote was talking about how a ruler
should be very careful in how he administers power to those under him.
If not done carefully, it can come back to hurt him. I think it said
that power should be divvied up so that no one person has a clear
advantage and can eventually start an uprising. It actually might
have said instead something about the proper level of power to
administer - too little and they get resentful, but too much and you
grow too dependent on them and they have the leverage.
It intrigued me because if i recall correctly, it was written by an
actual king ( I want to say one of the king henry's?). It was written
in first-person, so it might have been an essay by the author/ruler to
one of his prince's or something.
It seemed like a reference that would be chock-full of good advice, so
I'd love to get the whole reference. |
