I have one clue. The only Warren or Ellsworth on a list of cfficers of the Continental Navy and Marine Corps is James Warren, a Marine lieutenant. (A Massachusetts political leader of time was also named James Warren, and it is conceivable that they are the same person, though I certainly wouldn't assume that without evidence.)
