Using Windows 2000 Professional, I accidentally pressed a wrong button
and now have a "new Winamp media file.wav," useless and unwanted. When
I try to delete it, an error message pops up denying access to the
file because the source or
target file is possibly open (or words to that effect). Since this .wav file
has nothing in it (i.e. no music - only 48 bits) I don't understand
how it could possibly be open - there's nothing to open! I have made
sure that Winamp is not running, restarted the computer, and the file
still won't delete. How do I get rid of this unwanted file? If the
answer (I hope there is one) involves going to safe boot, that's OK.
But I'm no computer expert, and would appreciate "step 1...step2..."
instructions. |

Hi eusebius,
Ok, here's an easy idea.
Right click on the file, select properties, and see if there is a
check mark in the "Read Only" box - if so, uncheck it.
Fingers crossed,

Try starting in Safe Mode:
·If the computer is running, shut down Windows and then turn off the power.
·Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
·When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom
of the screen, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows 2000 Advanced
Options Menu appears.
·Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. In most cases, it is
the first item in the list and is selected by default. (If it is not
selected, use the arrow keys to select it.)
·Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode. This can take a few minutes.
Now try to delete the file, previously check the file properties and
if it is necesary uncheck read only mark.
·When you are finished with all troubleshooting, close all programs
and restart the computer as you normally would.
If this works please let me know and i will post it as the answer.
Regards.

Thanks for the two comments
For some mysterious reason, after several days and many attempts when
the file would not delete, I was able to get rid of the file this
evening by using the Eraser file removal program (already on the
computer) immediately after turning on the computer. I went to the
file through Eraser without otherwise "touching" (i.e. clicking) the
actual file. And to my astonishment it vanished!
