In what month and year did IBM officially discontinue selling OS/2?
I'm asking specifically because I want to know when ATM manufacturers
would have started moving away from OS/2 to other operating systems
such as Linux and Windows. (And no, it's not so I can hack into ATMs,
it's for a quiz on computer trivia :-)

Hello.

OS/2 was officially withdrawn as a shrink-wrapped software package in March 2003.

source:
Software Withdrawal: Selected Part Numbers of OS/2 Warp V4 and Warp
Server for e-business Programs:
"Effective March 12, 2003, IBM will withdraw from marketing the part
numbers licensed under the IBM International Program License Agreement
(IPLA) ..."

Also see: TheInquirer.net:
"IBM waves goodbye to OS/2 operating system"

However, also see:
"Rumours of OS/2's death greatly, or maybe slightly exaggerated"
From TheInquirer.net:

The truth is that IBM still apparently will sell you OS/2 is you want it.
See this newsgroup post from a few days ago, archived by Google Groups:
"Subject: Re: Where does one find OS/2?"

As indicated, the software still seems to be available for sale
through IBM's "Passport Advantage" program:

------

search strategy:
os/2 discontinued, discontinuing
os/2 discontinued, december 2002
os/2 discontinued, march 2003
os/2 "passport advantage"

I hope this helps.

Sorry for that typo:
"...sell you OS/2 if you want it."

Thankyou Juggler :) Answered comprehensively within about an hour.
Much appreciated.

It's interesting that you found that IBM will still sell it to you if
you want it - and only officially discontinued it in March 2003. I was
sure that they discontinued it long before that, but like you, found
it quite difficult to find a definitive answer on the web. Looks like
it's not as easy as IBM thoguht to phase out a major operating system
(even if it only ether grabbed a niche portion of the market...!)

OS/2 "lives" on as a new product from Serenity Systems Inc known as eComStation.
