Many news articles mention this or that industry and refer to it as
"the $200 million blah blah industry" or "the "$28 billion airline
industry". (I am making up my own figures here, especially with
respect to the blah blahs.)

Where do these industry size figures come from? Is there a consistent
source that is unimpeachable from an economic perspective.

The answer to this question will lead me to a source where I can
search any commonly defined industry group and find the annual
revenues for that grouping. The figures will be very current (2001 or
2000 at the latest). The industry groupings will be consistent with
US government industry definitions.

I believe that this is what you're looking for: Gross Domestic Product
by Industry in Current Dollars, 1994-2000
http://www.bea.doc.gov/bea/dn2/gpoc.htm#1994-2000

The United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis
publishes a ton of data, including the above. They have this data cut
both in current dollars as well as constant dollars (inflation
adjusted). See http://www.bea.doc.gov/bea/dn2/gpo.htm

GDP by industry is a measure of the contribution of each private
industry and of government to the Nation's gross domestic product. It
is defined as an industry's gross output less its purchases of
intermediate inputs. (Gross output consists of sales or receipts and
other operating income, commodity taxes, and inventory change;
intermediate inputs consist of the goods and services that are
purchased for use in production from other industries or imported.)

I hope and believe this is what you're looking for. If for any reason,
you require something else, please hit the ole "clarification" button
and ask away!

This site gives information on various sectors of different countries.
It gives much more than the industry size including industry trends,
future opportunities and recent developments.
