Question ID: 277195
How many DEVELOPERS exist in the mobile applications market (for PDAs,
cellphones, smartphones etc)?
Since this is for a business plan, I need an AUTHORIZED answer. The
best would be data from research firm (Gartner etc); Other answers can
help as well if they come from respected sources (companies from this
field)
Please note that I already have data from partial sources (like
Handango.com and development kits vendors). The problem is that each
one of them relates to the number of users with THEIR product/service
- not the full number of all mobile applications developers.
Segmentation (how many develop for Palm, how many develop for J2ME,
how many for Symbian...) will also be appreciated.

Hello amatas-ga,

Could you direct the researchers here to the "partial sources" that
you have already identified?

By being able to see the specific types of information you are
seeking, it will help to formulate the best research strategy for
finding an answer for you.

For instance, right now I am not certain if you are looking for the
number of developer companies, or the number of individual people that
do such development.

Any additional information would be a big help.

Thanks.

To your first question, I have three pieces of data:
1. Handango's information about year 2002 statistics.
2. Palm's declaration of 275,000 developers.
3. Nokia announcement of 600,000 downloads of the mobile development
kit from its web site.

To your second question, the most important data is the number of
developers. But any information regarding the development scale
(number of companies for instance) which is authorized will help. Same
goes for GROWTH data in this matter.

Hello amatus-ga,

Thanks for your clarification.

I am not yet finding the type of detailed breakouts you're seeking.
Nor am I even finding many proprietary reports that MAY have the data
for those willing to spend several thousands dollars to find out.

Instead, I come across a number of statements from very reputable
company sources referring to, e.g.:

I've identified the following types of information so far:

--more than a million Nokia mobile ap developers

--seven million Windows developers who Bill Gates would like to see
gravitating to mobile aps, but aren't necessarily there yet

--over quarter of a million Palm OS mobile ap developers (which you already knew!)

--3 million Java developers, again, not all doing mobile aps, but Sun
would sure like to see them head in that direction

-6 million Visual Studio.Net developers (migrating towards mobile aps)

Would this type of information, in the context of the original
document in which it appears, be useful to you?

Given the apparent paucity of more detailed applications developer
statistics, are there other types of information (project growth in
cell phone use, for instance) that would be useful to you.

In short, let me know what would suffice as an appropriate answer to
your question, and I'll see if I can meet your needs.

Thanks.

I'm sorry, but I already have all the data concerning the cell phone
use, sales of PDAs etc. What I need, and I know it's hard to find
(otherwise I would have found it myself... ;-) is statistics about
DEVELOPERS.

To extract my point, our business is to sell a product for mobile
applications developers. Therefore, we need to say - there are X
developers, we will send to Y% of them in the price of Z, and that's
how we'll make $W. We're looking for information that will help us
make the X of that equation in a stable manner (a figure like how many
.NET developers exist won't do...).
