According to an article in Wired News dated March 15, 2001, 17,000
dot.coms were funded in 1999.
?Penton pointed out that while 140 dot-coms went bust last year,
that's out of a pool of 17,000 that were funded in 1999. About 31,000
jobs were lost in the closures, but the dot-com bubble did create 2.3
million over a five-year period. ?

12,000 new dotcoms were created between 1996 and 2000.
?Only in the United States, venture capital funds financed new dotcoms
for over $200 billion in 1999 and 2000. Around 12,000 new dotcoms were
created between 1996 and 2000.?
