Dear orty8, The correct full name of the park is "Richard Bong State Recreation Area". It is named after Major Richard "Dick" Ira Bong (September 24, 1920 - August 6, 1945) who was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC). Bong is the United States' all time "Ace of Aces", having shot down 40 enemy aircraft during World War II. Read a biography of Richard I. Bong here: Wikipedia: Richard Bong http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Bong Additional Source: Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: Richard Bong State Recreation Area http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/bong/ Hope this answers your question. Regards, Scriptor |
