Please provide statistics or percentages on how many college students
were able to find jobs right out of college in 2003.

Due to the dot com bust it was very hard for most students to find
jobs. I'm looking for numbers to support that.

Hello bboymsjee-ga,

I?ve watched at least a dozen researchers lock and release this
question. I?d worked on it previously on your earlier version so I
decided to try again. It?s much tougher than you would expect. I
haven?t found comprehensive statistics for how many college students
found jobs right out of college but I can offer you some information
about how recent graduates are faring.

Most of the reporting on the job market for recent college grads is
based on the press releases from the National Association of Colleges
and Employers. Their most recent reports provide the final report on
the salaries for 2003 grads and outlook for 2004. Surprisingly, they
don?t have placement rates. This information may be available from
them if you ask as they offer many reports for sale.

I?ve also located a report from a labor market research organization
that discusses the unemployment rates of recent college graduates.
Their most recent report was issued in May of 2003 and uses statistics
through 2002. Another research institute that reports on educational
statistics has a lot of information that is related to your question
but they don?t seem to have anything yet that includes 2003 graduate.

The specific information you?re looking for about graduate placement
rates is available from schools directly ? especially for majors and
programs that are doing well. I could gather a representative
selection of these to give you an overview of what happened to the
class of 2003.

I hate giving up on a search when I?ve invested as much time as I have
on this one -- I hate to admit frustration and defeat ? but I?m afraid
the specific information you?re looking for is not available.

Will you accept what I?ve found as an answer? I look forward to your clarification.

Please do that, and provide links to other sources.

I truly appreciate your time on this question and I will tip you appropriately.

Hello bboymsjee-ga,

I'm a little wary of taking this on because of your rating of my
answer on your other question. Let me clarify what will be acceptable
for you. The research on 2003 graduate shows that colleges conduct
surveys of their graduates to find out where everybody landed. The
results that are available are not uniform or consistent. Some are
done by schools, departments, majors (e.g., school of engineering or
biology department or music majors) and some are done by the whole
school. They tend to be available only for schools that want to brag
about how well they're doing with placing their students so the
perspective may be too optimistic for the overall hiring picture for
the class of 2003.

I've noticed that whenever the NACE surverys or BLS employment numbers
come out, various newspapers will contact their local college and ask
how they did and write a story to customize the NACE press release. As
you can see, these reports will be highly anecdotal.

Please let me know if this information will be acceptable and also
tell me how many you would accept as the answer in light of how you
priced your question.

I await your clarification.

Yes, that is satisfactory. I understand that this data is probably
very difficult to come by since 2003 graduates graduated in this past
May. The data from 2002 may actually be more relevant for my case
anyways. If you give me the data and sources from 2002, and case
studies of the ones you found for 2003, I will rate you high.

Hello again bboymsjee-ga,

As I indicated in my earlier clarification, getting comprehensive
employment statistics for all college graduates in the US is very
difficult ? dare I say, impossible. My research shows that schools
conduct satisfactions surveys of their graduates which ask for
employment status. These survey results are used mostly for
accreditation and marketing purposes and may or may not be made public
by the individual institution. Public educational institutions are
sometimes required to collect this information and these reports are
available if you can find them. There are various organizations that
also collect employment data on various groupings of graduates (MBA,
law, nursing, etc.) and these are sometimes publicized in the general
or business press.

You asked for information on the class of 2003 but this information is
mostly anecdotal. The survey results for the class of 2002 are just
coming out. I?ve included a sampling of the various reports and
statistics I?ve found. I hope that these will be useful for your
project.

Wishing you well.

The job market for young college graduates
A difficult start amidst a jobless recovery
Millions of young college graduates currently are preparing to enter
the job market. Unfortunately, they will find a particularly weak
labor market awaiting them.

Unemployment
Over the first two downturns shown in Figure A, unemployment rises in
the expected manner when the economy hits a recession. But in the
current downturn, the increase for young college graduates was larger
than in past cases, as unemployment grew from an historical low point
of 1.7% in 2000 to 3.1% in 2002. Despite the fact that the overall
unemployment rate remains lower than in past recessions, the 2002 rate
for young college graduates is about the same, implying that this
group has been disproportionately hurt by the weak labor market.
