We are building a database of stock exchange information, including
historical pricing, and have the following question: What, if any, are
the standards for uniquely identifying a stock on exchange in the
world market? For example BSE stands for "Boston Stock Exchange" and
"Bombay Stock Exchange".

Hi James,

I'm just wondering if you have looked into the SEDOL (Stock exchange
identification number) or MIC (Market Identifier Code) as potential
ways to achieve your purpose? The acronyms you noted in your question
are informal whereas these codes are unique but are different in a few
ways.

Please let me know if information regarding SEDOL and MIC would
suffice as an answer :)

The problem seems that there is no truly international listing of
stock issues. SEDOL and CUSIP are labels for security identifiers.
ABGX.O is a NASDAQ listed security. AFC.L is on the London exchange.
ANG.MI is on Borse Italiania. ADL.A is on the American Stock Exchange.

I am unable to find the system of standards upon which these listings
are based, whether they are universally used, and who does pricing by
these standards.

I hope that this helps.
