Weekend Today , Saturday or Sunday November 1 or 16 a correspondent
offered information on a "young investers club" where for a designated
sum of money the child receives in his name a "portfolio" with a
smattering of stock such as Disney, Sony, Nike, Nintendo, etc plus a
periodic newsletter on investing etc. I have been unable to find any
such thing. Can you?

I'd suggest looking into investing for kids at the NAIC site:
  www.better-investing.org
Thye are the guys that support investment clubs around the world, so they
have a lot of resources on investing, even for kids.

Also, look into direct investing at various companies, eg you can buy stock
in Coke, a small amount at a time; this is called a DRIP program, for dividend
reinvestments.

good luck- glad to hear you are starting that kid out so early.

Are you perhaps remembering this article titled "Gifts with a great
return" by Jean Chatzky published in the USA Weekend newspaper insert
for Nov. 7 -9? It mentions OneShare.com as a site where you can buy a
single share of stock for a young investor.
