Do you live in that area? If so, I can tell you where you can go to
view that information.

Or, do you need to see the information online? There may be a site
where it is available online; but the site is down at the moment. All
that I can obtain online now is the approximate locations of sex
offenders in that zip code, but not the names.

There are a number of "Pay Sites" on the web but you never know what
you will get after you pay. $29...I would like just a list with names
and addresses. I would think this should be available as it is in
Florida, free.

It should be available on the Internet. That is what I am looking
for. Local law enforcement probably could provide the info but for my
purpose that is not viable. Yes I live in that area.

Are you saying that information from local law enforcement would not
be sufficient as an answer? I just want to make sure about this.

In this instance, since it is not for me, yes is the answer to your
question. The Internet or a published document should be the source.

Hello Schmedley,

Thank you for accepting the information I provided as an answer to
your question. Just to round out what's available, here are a few more
links you might find useful:

This one is to a list of California public records, including state
inmate and offender incarceration status, county-by-county court
records and documents, and the LAPD "Most Wanted" list:
http://www.publicrecordfinder.com/states/california.html

Here is a direct link to the Riverside Co. sex offender map:
http://imshost.cevian.net/riverside/jsp/

This will take you to the Riverside Co. Sheriff's Dept. page:
http://www.co.riverside.ca.us/sheriff/

From the Oakland City Attorney's page is this contact information:
California Department of Justice Sex Offender Identification Line:
1-900-463-0400 ($10 charge) http://www.oaklandcityattorney.org/megan.

Posted on the CA Atty. General page (in the FAQ section) is this
explanation of why sex offender information is not posted on the
( http://caag.state.ca.us/megan/faq.htm#q5 ):

?Why isn't this information available on the Internet?

?Whether the information can be made available on the Internet is
still in legal dispute. Megan's Law is intended to prevent further
victimization in local communities by making available certain
information on the whereabouts of a registered sex offender. The
information is available at designed law enforcement offices. The
courts have not yet settled whether it is constitutional to
disseminate via the Internet information about registered sex
offenders beyond the community where they live and work. The federal
appellate court having jurisdiction over California (Ninth Circuit
Court of Appeals) has indicated such information should be distributed
narrowly to areas where the public has a safety interest in receiving
information about residents in their area. Placing information on the
Internet would provide worldwide access.?

These links are to more information on California's "Megan's Law,"
including news reports on its current status, and efforts to make sex
offender registry information available over the internet:
http://caag.state.ca.us/megan/
http://www.rcfp.org/news/2003/1007ab1313.html
http://www.safestate.org/index.cfm?navid=217

You can read the full text of the law (the 1996 version) here:
http://www.alllaw.com/state_law_search/california/

And more law, here: http://megans-law.net/California-Megans-Law.asp

And here are links to various sites on California law in general:
http://www.loc.gov/law/guide/us-ca.html

Again, thank you for allowing me to claim the fee for this question.
I appreciate the opportunity to help you find such information as is
currently available, and wish you all the best.

Regards,
Byrd

Hi Schmedley,

Whether this information "should be" available for free online or not,
the fact is that it's not. Here's a link to such sex offender
information as IS available online for Riverside County:
http://www.co.riverside.ca.us/sheriff/crime/meganlaw.htm

They state, " A valid California drivers license, or identificaton is
required to view the sex offender database. The database search
results include name, physical description (hair color, eye color,
weight, height, etc.), zip code, and photo *only*. No street name, or
specific location (other than zip code) is given, per California law.

The sex offender database may be viewed at the following Riverside
County Sheriff's Department stations, and contract city stations.
Please call the contact numbers listed, to make an appointment.

Unfortunately, Corona isn't one of the cities listed, but hopefully
one will be near enough so as not to be too much an obstacle.

Best wishes,
Byrd

I am so curious as to why you want to get this information? There has
to be an interesting yarn here. Are you making a moving or real estate
decision based on the information that you are looking for here?
Please post what you find.I'm very curious.

Well, not knowing how this system worked, I have to address each with
the clarification;

The 21:45 comment was for justaskscott-ga;

The byrd-ga response tells me I can?t get what I want. In all
fairness, I will accept this as an answer.

For yesman-ga, I can say, I suppose there is always a ?yarn? but
regarding this particular issue, I will have to pass.

Thank you all..Schmedley
