EXPLORER.EXE caused an "Unknown" fault in module SENS.DLL
at 0167:6010857F.
This is what I get when entering or leaving the internet the first
time. After that it's OK until I restart the computer.. How do I fix it?

Hi,

It appears that your wsock32.dll file is corrupted.
I assume you are using Windows 98?

If so, to restore the file, you need your Windows 98 CD in the drive,
then do the following:
start->run->sfc->ok
Then either replace that file, or ask it to check all system files for corruption.

Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks.

It also could be a virus, please run an up to date virus checker.

Thanks.

Have run McAfee Viruscan with current updates. This only happens after
booting up and only one time, then is great until I reboot. Will Check
the Wsock32.dll file as you suggest.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi,

I'm wondering if it's a program you have running that is causing this problem.

Could you please try:
start->run->msconfig->startup

Uncheck everything in the startup tab (you might want to write down
any changes you make), reboot and try again. You might want to note
that some programs might not work as expected if you remove items from
startup, but this is just to diagnose a problem. If it works this
time, reverse the changes one program at a time until you find the
culprit. If it doesn't work then put back everything as it was.

Thanks.

Hi,

I Turned off all but Explorer, and Systray then tried it with the same
results, it still gave me the error, good idea, though.

Sorry to hear that didn't help.

My last suggestions are to try installing the DUN upgrade for Windows 98:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=BE625DBB-5AFE-426A-BC0A-71AAC2000AE8&displaylang=en

And failing that, reinstall Windows, without necessarily formatting,
just install Windows again in the same directory.

Please let me know if the above helps.

Thanks.

Hi again,

Another kind researcher has recommended that you try housecall and
scan for viruses again. Mcafee might not be as thorough as we'd
expect.

Could you please try it at:

Trend Micro Housecall

Thanks.

Hi,

Well, I installed Dun upgrade for win98,and scanned all files with
HouseCall, No infected files, and no help either, It looks as if the
only thing to do now is to reinstall Win98, unfortunately, I don't
know how to do that without having to reinstall all of my programs,
and I think that I would rather just put up with the error notices
than reinstall all of my programs. Is there an easy way to reinstall
Win98 without having to reinstall all of the other programs??

Sincerely,

Bill Rowe

Hi,

One last suggestion, try Spybot Search and Destroy to have a look for spyware.
You can download it from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

I would expect that if you reinstalled Windows in the same directory
as it is now, you wouldn't need to reinstall all your programs. They
wouldn't be deleted from the hard drive, and all the files they copied
to the Windows directory would remain.

However this cannot be guaranteed. On the other hand I installed
Windows 2000 in a new directory on my hard drive and most programs
actually still worked.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have both, SpyBot, and Ad-Aware on this machine, I run them both
regularly and keep it clear of that junk. I think that my best bet is
to reinstall Win 98, but don't know how to go about doing that.

Hi,

To reinstall Windows 98, you want to change your BIOS settings so that
your computer boots from your CD-ROM drive. This is usually in the
BIOS features section, under 'boot device 0' or 'first boot device'.
Usually the "page up" and "page down" keys allow you to change the
options. Then you need to save the settings and exit. Insert the
Windows 98 CD in the drive before the computer boots up, it should
then prompt you to boot from the CD, choose the option to install
Windows, and from there on it's just following the onscreen
instructions. I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes or if
you have any problems.

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes, I got Win98 reinstalled with no problems, but still no help. I'm
wondering if my problem is somewhere in the directory. Maybe I'll have
to put up with it until I have to reformat and start from scratch
again.

Sincerely, BILL ROWE
