Back ground
I work at a high school where all the students have there own laptops.
 The headmaster at the school has decided to integrate technology into
all the students regular curriculum. My job is to find and integrate
this software/technology into each of the major disciplines, English,
Math, Science, History and Foreign Languaage. There is so much stuff
out there I don't know where to begin. I don't want to demo a lot of
bad software/services before I get to the best, so here is my question
again.

I'm looking for educational software to integrate into our regular
curriculum. Let me be more specific. I'm
looking for the best educational software (can be internet service) on
the market, specifically
for high school students in the areas of Math, English, History,
Science, Writing and Foreign Language. Oh, and if there is any Science
software out there that can simulate experiments on the laptop, I'd
love to hear about
it.  Thanks Andy

Can you describe more in-depth what you're looking to achieve with
this software? Do you want complete networkability with the teacher's
computer and the students' laptops? Do you want the teacher to have
the ability to emulate the students' screens? to display his/her
screen on the students' computers? Do you want the software to have
coursework, examples, textbook integration?

Thanks for any clarification.

Drakes --

This is a pretty tough question to answer, as each grade level and
class has specific objectives and software will vary. For example,
the math curriculum could go through these levels, each with very
different programs:
*  algebra
*  advanced algebra
*  geometry
*  trigonometry
*  differential calculus
*  integral calculus
*  analytic geometry
*  statistics

A powerful tool used in upper level math is Wolfram Research's
Mathematica -- but students might be far better served with other
software that takes lessons incrementally or which contains a large
number of exercises. You might want to begin by providing some
resources to the school's instructors, then having them pursue
specific software.

A rich way to research this area is to use the following Google search strategy:
"best practices" + "high school" + software

Best regards,

Omnivorous-GA

I have two very simple objectives:
1. Give teachers an easier and more efficient way of presenting course
material...by way of technology.
2. Help students understand course material easier and more
efficiently...by way of technology.

If there is something very interesting out there, cutting edge, I'd
love to demo it.
I'm a big believer in modeling.
If I see something out there that's working great for kids, I'll
implement it in my school, only I don't have the time to demo a lot of
software, so that's where YOU come in.
If you could do research on what's working great out there in the
areas of high school: English, Math, Science, History and Writing then
I'd LOVE to see it.

Again, if it's software that you put on the network or stand alone, I
don't really care, but what I do care about is the quality of the
program.

We just implemented Cyberlearning Labs Course Management and
Collaboration Software in the school and it's a huge hit.
I'm amazed at the power of this software and how much it will help our school.
Now, I'm trying to go more specific in terms of actual actuall subject matter.

And to answer your questions, yes, I would love to see all of this!
Do you want complete networkability with the teacher's
computer and the students' laptops? Do you want the teacher to have
the ability to emulate the students' screens? to display his/her
screen on the students' computers? Do you want the software to have
coursework, examples, textbook integration?

Thanks JBF

Hi drakes -

I've been in contact with a few places regarding your request. How
many applications were you looking for?

"I've been in contact with a few places regarding your request. How
many applications were you looking for?"

I'm looking for as many or as little as you can come up with.
If you give me one in math, one in english, one in history, and one in
science that would be great.
Even if you find only two great things in foreign language and
writing...that would be great also.
Listen the more the better, but I know their are a lot of subjects out there.

Just to let you know what we offer at the school:
Math: Algebra, Geometry, pre calc and regular calc.
English: we offer English
Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics
History: American History, European History, World to 1945, Global Studies
Foreign Language: Spanish, Hebrew, Italian, French

Whatever you can do will be greatly appreciated.

Hello drakes-ga,

I?m not surprised that you feel swamped by the amount of educational
software and resources available for the high school market. It was
somewhat overwhelming, but definitely fun and exciting, to find such a
wealth of materials available for your purposes. As a someone who has
enjoyed lifelong learning (and teaching) it was a very interesting
quest to seek out materials that would intrigue your teachers and
students and enhance the learning experience for all.

I think you?ll enjoy the collection of resources I?ve gathered. Many
of the links I?ve provided will take you to additional resources. I
focused on choosing quality and variety to help you with fulfilling
your mission in making the most of your school?s technology
capabilities.

While searching for materials in the six specific academic areas of
interest you named I came across some vendors that covered several
subjects as well as educational portals and directories that should
help further your explorations. I started my search by looking at
Cyberlearning Labs to see if I could find high schools that were
already using some products that might be of interest to you. This led
me to identifying some high schools that share your objectives and I
thought you could contact them to find out what they're using in
addition to reviewing the materials I've found.

Please don?t hesitate to ask for clarification if anything I?ve
provided is confusing. There is a great deal of information available
for your quest.

I?m envious of your students. I wish I?d had this kind of resources
available to me when I went to school.

Enjoy!
