i'm sorry for the low amount of money for the question, I am a poor
college student in love with video, so I blew all my money on this
@#$!^$!#@ machine!
Also, I will work closely with anyone (answering any questions about
my computer specs or whatnot relativly fast), Basically, all I really
care about is getting pPro to run smoothly. I am actively trying to
figure this out on my own as well, so if I figure it out before you,
then you will NOT get paid. I have posted on 2 forums to date:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@209.9MKBbvKaGRa.150756@.2cce8a0e/3
and http://www.dmnforums.com/cgi-bin/disppost.cgi?forum=adobe_premiere&filename=031023015317.htm
I hope those links work.

Ok, I'm at the end of my wits. I've spent days, nay weeks trying to
figure this out. So any help would GREATLY be appreciated. pPro runs
very slow, slow enough that it's basically unusable. The video and
audio preview is very choppy and laggy, maybe 5 frames a second ? also
a long delay on playback. I installed pPro on my old computer, and it
was bad, I attributed it to my specs, so I bought a new machine, Here
are my system specs:
XP Pro SP1
Dell Dimension 8300
800 MHz FSB
HT Enabled
2.6 GHz
1.5 GB Ram
Intel 875P Chipset/ 82875P Mem Controller, 82801EB/ER ICH5/ICH5R,
Integrated Graphics: Not detected
GeForce FX 5200 AGP8X, 128 MB Driver 4.5.2.3
2 7200 rpm Maxtor HD 40GB and 160 GB (IDE)
I would think that the hardware is sufficient to run pPro. So I?m
figuring that it?s the configuration settings. I?ve looked through the
forums, and this is what I have tried (and in different combinations):
Tried NVIDIA drivers 52.16, (rolled back because taskbar would not
span across dual monitors).
Changed playback options for desktop hardware only
Switched pPro from using Direct3D to GDI for drawing video (registry)
I use separate physical drive for files and scratch.
Read somewhere that Intel Application Accelerator will help. But I
can?t install either of the two (raid and non raid) because of my
system configurations.
I already had A02 Bios on my computer. I checked the Dell website,
they had bios A03. I flashed my bios to A03. pPro still choppy. Maybe
I should reflash A02? Regarding to the IDE settings, for both primary
and secondary, transfer mode for 'device 0' is dma if available, and
it says that the 'current transfer mode' is 'ultra dma mode 2'.
However, under 'device 1' (listed after device 0) the transfer mode is
'dma if available', but the current mode is 'pio mode'. Could this be
the culprit? I do not know the difference between device 0 and 1,
(both under primary IDE Channel). The secondary IDE properties say the
exact same thing.
I did install this system myself. And I installed the Intel chipset
driver, bios (A03 now). I am a little confused as to what ALL the
drivers are. I did get the graphics and audio drivers (required to see
and hear!) Should I go through device manager and try to "update
driver" for every single thing?
Also, my hardware acceleration is on full for both video adapters.
I've tried to change it to none, but it does not solve the problem.
Even if i disable one of my two monitors/adapters, it doesn?t solve
anything. What does write combining do? Will it help to uncheck that
box?
I?ve invested $1000+ to use premiere, and its still unusable, I need help! Thanks! |

Yes, I did try setting hardware acceleration at 80%, (and all other
settings too). It did not help. But now, the whole question is moot
because...
The Problem is FIXED!!
Solution: by Peter Ferling on Adobeforums.com
I actually did both, and now it works like a charm. This man is my hero.
"Hmmm, two things:
One:
Is your A/V drive jumper set to "cable sellect"? Dells are notorious
for this (I'm on my fourth one now). Your drive must be set to either
"master" or "cable select" CS.
(The jumper settings are physically set on the drives themselves by
way of crossing two pins with a small "jumper" piece.)
You can only have one master device per buss, the others must be set
to slave or cable select.
So, if your drives are sharing the same buss, set the system drive
jumper to Master, and the A/V to cable select.
Two:
Place your A/V drive on the other IDE channel by itself, set it to
master or cable select. Note: If your CD drive is on that other
channel, move it (the CD Drive) to the channel the system drive is on,
and set it to "cable select" (the system drive should be master).
See if this corrects your problem, which I think stems from a bottle
neck due to bandwidth, resource issues. "
Thanks Pete. Although I am wondering why nobody else is having this
problem. Adobe does tell us to put files on two different physical
drives. And it would make sense if they were put on the same cable.
Oh well.
