I honestly feel that the Statue of Liberty and the White House should
cease their "locked down" state of operation and allow the same public
tours that went on before the attacks of Sept 11, 2001. (You can
apparently visit Ellis Island, but not go inside the Statue of Liberty.
And you can only see the inside of the White House if you are part of
a tour group or have given huge sums to the Republican party).
Are there any groups or notable individuals that feel the same way
and are pushing for a return to status quo?

Millions for security needed to reopen Statue of Liberty - By Associated Press
Published November 9, 2003

"NEW YORK - A nonprofit group is looking for private donations to fund
security improvements needed to reopen the Statue of Liberty,
off-limits to the public since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The federal government already has spent millions of dollars on
upgrades, but about $5-million worth of security measures still are
needed before visitors can go inside the 151-foot-high statue,
National Park Service spokesman Brian Feeney said.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, which oversaw the
statue's restoration in the 1980s, offered to help raise the funds,
Feeney said."

[edit]

"Tourists still can't climb the statue, and the number of visitors to
the monument has dropped by about half to about 2.5-million a year.

Planned upgrades include fire and emergency notification systems and
more exits from the monument.

Coffee industry giant Folgers has pledged some of the first dollars
for the fundraising campaign, launched in September.

Folgers last month began running ads offering to contribute $1 for
every seal customers mail in from its new red plastic coffee
canisters. At least 2-million canisters are now in circulation.

Foundation spokeswoman Peg Zitko said another major company will join
the fundraising effort for Lady Liberty. She said it's too early to
say how much money has been raised by the "Re-Open Lady Liberty"
campaign.

No timetable is in place for reopening the statue, Feeney said."

Administration to expand White House tours - Most limits put in place
after 9/11 will be removed - From Dana Bash

Tours of the White House must be set up through congressional offices.

WASHINGTON (CNN) --

"The Bush administration will expand tours of the White House starting
September 16, once again allowing visits by anyone who wants one, a
spokesman said Tuesday.

Currently, White House tours are limited to school and youth groups,
U.S. military members and veterans groups who set up the tours through
their members of Congress.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said beginning September 16,
anyone who wants to tour the executive mansion may do so. However, the
tours must still be set up through congressional offices and visitors
must follow "required security procedures," McClellan said.

White House spokeswoman Ashley Snee said those security procedures
include submitting one's full name, Social Security number, date of
birth and country of origin.

After the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, White House tours were
canceled. They were restarted on a limited basis in February."

White House Public Tours Resume By Michael Coleman
Journal Washington Bureau

"WASHINGTON Two years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the
general public is once again invited to tour the White House.

The White House will resume public tours of the certain sections of
the executive mansion beginning next Tuesday, but anyone interested
will need some help from a member of Congress."

[edit]

"Currently, White House tours are available only to U.S. military
members, veterans groups and school and youth groups setting up the
tour through a member of Congress.

The tours were canceled in the aftermath of Sept. 11 and resumed on a
limited basis in February.

Tours of the U.S. Capitol also were canceled in the aftermath of Sept.
11, but also are available now through a member of Congress.

McClellan said the reinstated public tours are an indication that
security is better at the White House than before 9-11."

The White House opens its doors for public tours - A Closer Look at D.C

"The White House closed its doors to public tours after Sept. 11,
2001, and reopened in February for school, military, and veterans
groups. The White House once again opened its doors to public tours on
Sept. 16.

The White House closed to public touring after Sept. 11, 2001, but
eventually reopened in February for school, military and veterans
groups. The White House will once again open its doors to the general
public Sept. 16.

Before Sept. 11, it was unnecessary for visitors to make advance
arrangements to tour the White House. They simply lined up outside and
waited their turn. But because of increased security precautions,
unscheduled tours are no longer offered.

Now, to schedule a tour, interested people must make arrangements
through their Congressional representative's office. They must provide
name, social security number, date of birth and country of origin for
every person in their party.

Tours will only be permitted for 10 people or more. Tours are
scheduled on a first-come basis, and you must schedule the tour at
least 30 days in advance, but no more than six months prior to the
requested touring date. Tours will run from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday
through Saturday.

Once inside, the tour is conducted at your own pace."

I was actually looking more for groups or individuals who feel that
all of the extra security we're seeing at public sites of national
importance are unnecessary and hamper the people's ability to see
them. Still, it was interesting information and helpful to some
extent. Thank You.

Of course, if there should be another incident at any well-known
place, then 'the authorities' will be condemned for not taking more
precautions.
