How do I trace the record of an individual educational qualification
(UK)?
The qualification was the Intermediate Certificate in Arts and Crafts,
and the date in the late 1940's. The name of the person Valerie
Cotterell, and the question is asked with her permission.
If however the name creates an access problem, answer the question up
to the word "1940's".

Hi amal and thanks for the question,

A key piece of information here is where was the qualification gained
ie. which college or university? If you can tell us that it should be
possible to help.

Thanks

Hello

I am afraid that it is probably not possible to trace this
qualification, due to the complicated history of the Worthing School.
Over the years comprehensive records of students have not been
maintained and, it seems, irreplaceable archive material has been
lost.

Set up in the 19th century, the school was originally known as the
County School of Arts and Crafts. In the 30s it became the Worthing
School of Art. In 1952 it was renamed the West Sussex College of Arts
and Crafts, and the name was changed again in 1964 to the West Sussex
College of Arts and Design. A plan in 1986 to create a 'Central
Sussex Institute of Higher Education' based on West Sussex College
together with Worthing & Crawley Colleges of Technology was not
successful. Instead West Sussex College was amalgamated with the
existing College of Technology, sadly losing its identity in the
process. It is now part of Northbrook College which has five sites in
Worthing, Shoreham by Sea and Horsham, as well as satellites in
Brighton, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis.

I have spoken to the Examinations department at Northbrook College and
unfortunately they are only required to keep records of qualifications
for seven years. Although they do have some records going back to the
1960s, there is no information for the 1940s.

I have also spoken to the West Sussex Record Office who hold local
parish registers and other records. They have some registers of school
attendance and admission for church schools but no records at all for
local colleges. They hold a few items relating to West Sussex College,
for example plans for a proposed new bicycle shed which were lodged
with the council, and a photograph of new buildings, but nothing
relating to student attendance or qualifications. They have copies of
Minutes for Governors Meetings from 1948. These occasionally mention
students by name, or give details of examinations held, but there is
no mention of Valerie Cotterell or the Intermediate Certificate for
that year.

The local library in Worthing has local papers (Worthing Herald,
Worthing Gazette) on microfilm. There may have been a report on the
matriculation ceremony or lists of successful students for the
Certificate in Arts and Crafts in 1948. You need to visit in person to
check individual issues but you could do this via the services of a
local researcher (I can provide more details if required).

I am sorry not to be able to give you the information you are looking
for. I suggest as a next step that Valerie Cotterell registers on the
website called ‘Friends Reunited’ to see if she can track down any of
her contemporaries from the College. The West Sussex College of Art
and Design is listed on the website. Currently 3 ex-pupils are
registered for the years 1956 to 1960, none as yet for the period 1946
to 1956. She may be lucky and hear from someone who has kept releveant
archive material.

Best wishes

Catherine-ga

Despite the insuperable obstacles in the way of reaching the SPECIFIED
objective, this was an exceptional piece of tracking and 'College
history' in the time available — and it has enabled the original
enquirer to track down a note of the qualification having been
recorded, which is good enough for her purposes. Our joint thanks!
