Hello again jaxjags03-ga,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share with you what I?ve
found on the legal nurse consultant industry. As I said in my earlier
clarification, there is very little hard information available about
the number of successful practitioners or the leading consulting firms
in the business. I?ve found some statistics showing that the main
association in the field (AALNC) has about 3600 members. There is no
membership information available on the other organization (NACLNC).
Various sources suggest that about half of all legal nurse consultants
are in private practice while the rest work for law firms, insurance
companies and government agencies. It is difficult to determine who
are the most successful private practitioners and I found several
resources showing that many people who enter the field are not
successful at building a business.
Both nursing and law are licensed professions but legal nurse
consultants are not licensed. The two competing certification programs
both have proponents who recommend them but certification is not
necessary to self-designation as a legal nurse consultant. The
greatest requirement is competence as a nurse and the ability to sell
your capabilities to the law firm or other organization you want to
work with.
I was surprised and disappointed at how little statistical and market
research information is available on this new nursing specialty. The
information I?ve gathered will give you general insights into the
business.
Please don?t hesitate to ask for clarification if any of this is not clear.
Best wishes for your projects.

exciting field of legal nurse consulting!
Legal nurse consultants work in a variety of settings as well. About
half of the AALNC?s members are in independent practice, 25% work in
law firms and another 25% are employed in industry, government, HMOs,
hospitals or insurance companies. Many legal nurse consultants work
part-time when they are first getting started and then switch to
full-time once they have built a client base, according to the
association.

Nursing Career Options
A consultant, on the other hand, is an entrepreneur who provides
specialized services to customers on an hourly or contractual basis.
The legal-nurse consultant is the most popular. The American
Association of Legal Nurse Consultants estimates that attorneys employ
one-half of the legal nurse consultants and the other half are
self-employed nurse entrepreneurs.
Many large companies have downsized in-house resources and hire
consultants to do the jobs when needed. Types of consulting open to
nurses are limited only by the nurses? imagination. Some current areas
for consulting are: JCAHO pre-survey inspections, quality issues, cost
containment issues, wellness programs, pre-employment physicals and
drug screening, change-facilitators, safety programs, stress
reduction, communication studies, CPR courses, automatic external
defibrillators courses, and in-service health education.

Legal Nurse Consultant: An Exciting Option for Nursing
The legal world formally recognized the value of the LNC in 1988 when
the American Bar Association Journal featured the Arizona nurse
consultants in an article entitled ?Law Firms Branch Out.? This
ground-breaking article has been recognized as impetus for the
development of the foundation for the American Association of Legal
Nurse Consultants (AALNC). In 1994, the AALNC published its final
scope of practice statement, which today guides the LNC?s practice,
professionalism, education, and research.2

the profession of nursing in which Registered Nurses apply their
nursing education and clinical expertise to the medically related
issues of the litigation process. The primary role of the legal nurse
consultant is to evaluate, analyze, and render informed opinions about
the delivery of healthcare and the resulting outcomes.1
