Hello nopopo-ga

I must tell you upfront that I have been researching this for a while
but I haven't gotten very far. Anyway I will tell you where I have
searched and the leads I have found and you can tell me if you have
already pursued those paths and we can decide where to go from here.

I contacted several New Orleans web sites together with the library
and the mayor's office. The most useful reply I had was from Wayne
Everard
Archivist with the New Orleans City Archives, here is what he says:

We?re not likely to have much of the information that you seek. We
have a very brief report on the activities of the Dept. of Utilities
during the Marc Morial administration (1994-2002) that should include
at least some statistics on Taxicab Bureau activities for that period.
As you may know, the Dept. of Utilities was disestablished by the new
Nagin administration. The Ground Transportation Bureau of the Dept. of
Safety and Permits now regulates taxis in New Orleans (their web site,
with contact information, is
http://www.new-orleans.la.us/home/departmentsAndAgencies/safetyandpermits/);
they MIGHT be able to supply at least some of the information you
seek.

About the only other thing that we might be able to help with would be
newspaper articles, as we have both microfilm and online access to the
Times-Picayune back to 1989 and earlier. There were numerous articles
on the Taxicab Bureau and the industry as a whole in the paper last
year because of the corruption scandals, so you might be able to find
some of the data you need in those articles.

I do not leave in New Orleans and I am therefore unable to pursue this
lead but maybe you or some other researcher can do it.

Another lead I was suggested was to contact Mr Centineo responsible
for the Safety and Permits department at the New Orleans mayor office.
I tried to contact him by email but I had no response, maybe he would
be more responsive by phone.
The phone number for Safety and Permits is (504) 565-6111; fax (504)
565-6143 email for Mr. Centineo is michaelc@new-orleans.la.us

I was suggested by several people I contacted to try the New Orleans's
Taxicab Bureau. They do not have either a web site nor an email
address so the only way to contact them is by phone at(504) 565-6272.

These are all my findings so far, let me know what you have tried
already and if you have more suggestions, I will be happy to help you
further

I am afraid that there will be little public information available. I
also fear that the City of New Orleans has not conducted this type of
research itself. I know that some of this information is available in
other cities and I was just hoping that there was something that I was
missing. It may be necessary to hire a research company to conduct a
study.
