A Beadell used to be a surveyor in Central Australia.  He put out many

I believe you may be referring to Len Beadell, sometimes known as
Australia's last great explorer.  A biography is located at

has been described as 'The Last Australian Explorer' because of his
lifetime of work surveying, mapping and creating access to a vast
portion of the Australian Outback."
