HI,

I have a situation where I would like to rollout a wi-fi solution in a
staff compound and limit access via authorized MAC addresses.

The problem is, the whole bandwidth can be drained by a few users and
block out the rest till they're done.

How do I make sure that 'active' users are given equal portions of
available bandwidth? When I say active, I mean those that are
actively browsing and downloading, not those whom have their machines
On and are connected to the Access Point sitting idle.

We're probably looking at 100 to 150 users to manage, but this could
grow if it's successful to other applications.

Thank you.

I know of some software that does that. Star-os (www.star-os.com) has
some software you can put on a pc with a wireless card that makes it
an access point and allows you to limit the bandwidth use of
individual users. It has a 24 hour trial so it's worth checking out.

One of the best methods for bandwidth management and security is to
have your users connect through wireless and a VPN. With the VPN you
can manage the amount of bandwidth a client can have, this will allow
you to give a VP higher bandwidth than someone else, thus assuring a
happy experience.

Reasons why you would want to implement a VPN over wireless.

1) Superior security
2) Bandwidth management
3) Location independent

Cheers,
