TRANSLATOR. Repeating a golden oldie, compose email in your native
language and include as a CC address the specific address they provide
at http://www.t-mail.com for translation in any of six languages. A
machine translation to the desired language will be provided. While
you're at that site, you can also use the free service to convert any
Web site to one of those languages as well. Note that this is a machine
translation, so don't expect it to deal well with idioms.

MORE TRANSLATIONS. We've often offered as rainy day diversions
the numerous machine translation services the Internet has to offer.
One such is at http://www.alis.com/translate_online.html , and the
translation of our standard signature line: "NEAT NET TRICKS is a
blend of humor and helpfulness, a collection of computer and
Internet tips, twice-monthly worldwide by EMail. Subscribe FREE at
http://www.NeatNetTricks.com or send a blank email to
join-neatnettricks@silver.lyris.net ." from English to French and
back again returned this gem: "TOURS NET APPROPRIATE(CLEAN) are a
mixture of humor and the fact to be useful, a collection of
computer and the Internet tilts, twice monthly all over the world
by the ENAMEL. Please, sign FREE to http://www.NeatNetTricks.com or
send a white email to join-neatnettricks@silver.lyris.net. " While
that's amusing, especially the "clean" part, it's still a lot closer
to the original than many of the Internet translators we've seen.

{Translate words on-the-fly} Say you want to know the Spanish word
for "chocolate" (or any other word). You can wait for a bilingual
person to wander by your window, or you can use Pardon to look the
word up instantly. There's also a vocabulary helper included.
It'll come in handy when those delegates from the United Nations
come to Gnomedex; it translates from German, Norwegian, French,
Swedish, and Danish. Mmmmm... Danish. Now, if only I had this
thing back in high school. I would have passed with colores de
vuelo.

{Instant sentence interpretation} How do we handle a language
barrier? As the market expands, becoming more and more global by
the day, we need to find innovative ways for making our voices not
only heard, but understood. Squish a babble fish directly into
your ear canal. It may cause a bit of discomfort, but if it worked
for Arthur Dent, who are we to argue? Until our Hitchhiker's Guide
leads us to this fabled flounder, we'll have to make due with the
resources we have on hand. Er, on site. Words, phrases,
paragraphs... not perfectly ported, but translated well enough to
get the general idea.

THEY DON'T ALWAYS WORK. That's the best way to describe last
issue's featured WordWalla at http://www.everymail.com . It promised
to allow communications in 35 languages, but it doesn't seem to do much
of anything. I should have checked it closer, and I apologize for
wasting your time.

INSTANT MESSENGER TRANSLATOR. A free utility at
http://www.paralink.com lets you translate instant messenger chats on the
fly to and from major European languages. You can chat with your friends
on ICQ, AIM, and chat rooms even if you don't speak each other's
language. But don't expect them to fully understand you because often
these machine interpretations can be far from accurate.
