Hi,

I'm looking for games that build your skills and encourage planning
and appreciate the role of logistics. Graphical appeal of the games
is not important, even if they were Excel macros. :-)

If what I'm asking for is not clear, I'd appreciate examples of what
you're assuming I mean and we'll narrow it down as I'm not sure if I
know what I want either. ;-)

An effective game we used in business school at MIT is "The Beer
Game." If this is what you are looking for and would be an acceptable
answer, please let me know so that I can receive credit.

Thanks!

Wonko

Here are links to various versions of it, both online and in gameboard formats:

http://beergame.mit.edu "The MIT Beer Game" MIT

"The Beer Game was developed to introduce students, managers and
executives to concepts of system dynamics. The purpose of the game is
to illustrate the key principle that "structure produces behavior."
Players experience the pressures of playing a role in a complex system
and can see long range effects during the course of the game. Each
player participates as a member of a team that must meet its
customers' demands. The object of the game is to minimize the total
cost for your team."

Hi,

I realize I might be adding a bit of parameters, but I've added a tiny
bit to the question fee to help with the added effort to cover that
even slightly. :-)

I want more choices if possible to see if I run into something suitable.

Thank you.

Hello lizardnation-ga,

Simulations in business education are getting more and more popular. I
was able to find logistics related simulation games from a variety of
academic and business sources. Most of the high profile programs seem
to have come out of academic settings. Some of these are now available
on the web. Others may be available only in academic settings. There
are also some products that are available commercially. I noticed that
business education workshops and executive education programs
frequently emphasize that they offer simulations as part of the
program.

You said you weren?t quite sure what you were looking for. I hope that
the resources I?ve collected will meet your needs. Please don?t
hesitate to ask for clarification to make sure you get exactly what
you need.

Best wishes for your projects.

Control-ITŪ simulation is an industry-unique simulation that allows
participants to understand the process methods of IT Service
Management (ITSM). Central to this learning experience is a simulated
revenue-generating environment in which various injected problems
demonstrate service issues between an IT department and their
customers.

The Control-ITŪ simulation has been developed for groups of 12 to 16
participants, each of whom is given a role in the simulation. The
simulation situation involves three different, independent
organizations: the Assembly companies, Logistics Ltd and a Supplier.
The performance of the Assembly companies depends largely on the
capability of Logistics Ltd to deliver the promised logistics services
in a timely and effective manner. Since each organization needs to
make profit, the delivery of the services also have to be done in an
efficient manner.

The Special Interest Group seeks to promote the development and use of
simulation games for production management in education and in
industry. One of its activities is workshops, another the
establishment of a catalogue of games as a means for dissemination of
relevant games.

The aim of this catalogue is to help educators and industrialists
become aware of games in the area of production management and to
easily acquire further information.
As each game will pertain to a specific pedagogical situation and time
frame and address a specific set of issues related to production
management, we have made the catalogue accessible from a number of
characteristic game features. Also it is possible to go through the
whole catalogue and to search for a game via keywords.

This game was designed to integrate levels of production planning and
show the relationship between them. The planning topics covered by the
game are aggregate planning, inventory theory, lot sizing, productions
scheduling and materials requirement planning. The theory of each
topic has been covered individually. The In-Class Manufacturing Game
provides students with the opportunity to engage in production
planning at all these levels, to see how decisions at one level
interact with those at other levels, and to experience the challenges
involved in making a production operation run efficiently.

The latest version of the game is a computer simulation created using
Visual Basic in Excel. A free version of the software and copies of
the game packet are available to college faculty by contacting Salwa
Ammar or Ron Wright.

TAC SCM Game Description

Supply chain management is concerned with planning and coordinating
the activities of organizations across the supply chain, from raw
material procurement to finished goods delivery. In today?s global
economy, effective supply chain management is vital to the
competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises as it directly impacts
their ability to meet changing market demands in a timely and cost
effective manner. With annual worldwide supply chain transactions in
the trillions of dollars, the potential impact of performance
improvements is tremendous.

TAC-03 was designed to capture many of the challenges involved in
supporting dynamic supply chain practices, while keeping the rules of
the game simple enough to entice a large number of competitors to
submit entries. The game has been designed jointly by a team of
researchers from the e-Supply Chain Management Lab at Carnegie Mellon
University and the Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS).

Computers in the Classroom make Learning a Game

Today's generation of college students grew up with computer games, so
it should come as no surprise that university professors have turned
to the genre to illuminate classroom concepts. But to ISyE faculty,
computer games are more than just a fun way to learn. These games have
an ability to illustrate models that is far superior to conventional
classroom techniques.

Hello again lizardnation.

I think you will enjoy honing your planning skills on this one:

"Remember all of the times you considered, if I were a member of the
President?s Cabinet or even President of this university, I could turn
this place around? Now, you have your chance. Virtual University
challenges the student, as a player, to be the president of a college
or university. This first simulation of higher education
administration provides graduate students an instructional tool which
offers an active learning environment, develops intrinsic motivation
to learn, and serves as a valuable, practical, concrete learning
experience. The presentation will provide a demonstration of the
simulation and discuss potential uses in the classroom."

It's a free full version download too!

Very best regards
