Dear tripod,

That expression in the lyrics of George Strait's "Stars On The Water"
is often misinterpreted. Many transcripts of the song's lyrics refer
to the first lines as: "Down in Louisiana bayous by and by / A peirot
pole or your natural soul / Keeps you tied to a tree high tide..."
However, this is a misunderstanding. The term in the lyrics is
actually "pirogue pole".

A pirogue is a flat-bottomed boat used to traverse the bayous and
marshes of Louisiana. The pirogue pole is a long stick used to propel
the boat, much like a venetian gondola.
