I didn?t realize the TS CALS are keyed to a specific Key - Windows
2003 server and Term Server CALs licensing prob

We have 2 servers that are both 2003 server. The first one is only
acting as a file server, and can be retired as it isn?t being used
much.

The 2nd server is being used as a webdav server. It also was using
the free 120 days of terminal services that come with it and users
came to love connecting to a real desktop from remote location in
order to use the files that are also available via webdav. Some users
only use webdav and prefer to copy over files and work on them
locally.

When the 120 days expired, I bought Terminal Services CALS (licenses)
and went to Install and Activate the Term Server Licensing program on
the second server.

It accepted my CALs (retail license) and said users could now connect.
They could not. It turns out that the CALs I bought are keyed to
serial key of the 1st Win 2003 server, not the webdav one. I didn?t
realize the CALS are keyed to a specific Key.

After I realized that the 2003 server would not work with these CALs,
I uninstalled them and deactivated the Licensing Server. Now we don?t
have Terminal Services and some users are sad.

I have a complex series of WebDAV sites configured in IIS, and a long
list of users and groups setup on this server, so I don?t want to have
to reinstall windows as redo all this Config. It will take a full day
and I?ll have to deal with to passwords for each user. I need the
Term Server CALs on here because these Term users need access to the
files in the WebDAV folders when they are in the Terminal desktop.

I tried retiring the 1st server, and using a hack to change the serial
key on the weddav server, but it won?t accept the key from the 1st
server.

I called Microsoft but they said they wouldn?t help be unless I paid
$250 for the phone call.

Unless anyone has any idea of how to get it to accept the key from
server #1, I guess I?ll have to do a reinstall, which will be very
painful.

If this is my fate, is there anyway to take a snapshot of the webdav
Config (iis), users and groups, and all the various Outlook 2003
profiles that have been meticulously built on here.

The server is a stand alone server, no domains in here.

Any ideas?

Thanxs in advnce

Hi,

Is this the procedure you have tried to go through with Microsoft?
