i have a toshiba tablet pc (3505). major defect: the display gets
confused at times and goes into landscape mode when folded as tablet,
and goes dark (and unusable) when panel is spun into laptop mode.
toshiba support says they've heard of this but it's not an official
'issue' yet. they said to take it to repair shop. which for me is 4
hours away and i can't leave my machine there.
can you help me find a fix? |

Hi,
I've found this on a support forum, the description is the same problem as yours:
"It was a loose wire in the hinge and fixed it. Now about 4 days later, it's
happening again. Contact Toshiba for a repair which should be covered
by the warranty."
I don't think there's much you can do except return it, especially if
it's under warranty. You might want to send it by UPS if it's that far
away.
As this is not exactly what you were expecting please let me know if I
can post this as an answer, thanks.
Regards,

with the 'autorotation utility' which is a toshiba software product in
the machine.

Hi,
That is indeed strange but the problem was described as follows:
"The screen has died on me twice in 2 weeks. Here is what happens. I
using the machine in tablet mode, then I rotate the screen to but it
back into laptop mode. The screen becomes very dim - almost
unreadable. Then if I rotate it back to tablet mode the screens
becomes bright and is usable."
I'm guessing that a certain signal isn't going through well when
you're moving the hardware around but with the software utility you
somehow reset it.
You might want to take the tablet back to where you bought it from (if
it's not the same place as the repair shop you mention), and ask them
to take care of the problem under the warranty. They might be able to
provide you with a temporary replacement.
I've also found someone reporting a fix for another display problem on
the 3505, not sure if this will work but you might as well try:
"right click My Computer, choose properties,
go to Hardware tab, and then Device Manager
Find Human Interface Devices, expand that choice,
Look for any items labeled ? HID compliant device ?, there may be a few there,
right click each one and Choose Uninstall;
partway through you may be asked to restart, but do not until you?ve
done all of these steps
Do same with Wacom Driver if you have one
Next, Make sure you have your keyboard plugged in or activated and then restart;
Your pen interface will not be active when you first start and so
you?ll need to use your keyboard and mouse to logon; after that your
computer will recreate the HID drivers, and as soon as you?re fully
booted you should have your pen control back and all portions of your
screen fixed ; if not its probably the hardware problem"
Please let me know how it goes.
Thanks.

Hi,
No sorry, the only recommendation is to send it back for repair.
Sorry couldn't be more helpful.
Thanks.
