Question ID: 282472
From help I received on a prior question, I used the program called
TMPGEnc to convert avi files to mpeg files.

Problem is, after burning these mpeg files onto a CD, I can't get a
vcr to read them. I keep getting error messages, something like
"check to see if your cd is scratched..."

Would appreciate any direction.

Hi again skip9801,

Do you know if your DVD player supports CD-Rs or CD-RWs?
Also do you know if your DVD player supports SVCD or VCD?

If the answer to both those is yes, then there's a problem with the
format you're converting to.

Are you using the standard settings within TMPGEnc for the VCD or SVCD standard?

Thanks.

Hi,

One more question, have you been burning the MPEG files directly to
the root directory of the CD?

If yes then you need to burn them in a different manner first.

Please answer to the clarifications and I'll let you know how to proceed.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm burning the files to the root directory. I'm not
clear what that means.

To copy the files from my PC to the CD, i'm right-clicking on the file
and using the "send to" option.

Hi,

For your DVD player to read the CDs you would need to copy over the
MPEG files in a specific way. What program do you have for writing to
CDs (e.g. Nero)?

Thanks.

Also what MPEG format are you converting the files to? MPEG1 or MPEG2?

Thanks.

That may be what I'm doing wrong. I'm not using any special program
to copy the file from my PC to the CD. I first right click on the
file name (from within Windows Explorer), tell it to send the file to
the drive letter of the external writable CD-R. I then get a little
message saying a file is waiting to be written and I click on the
message and then follow a prompt to write the file to the CD.

I didn't realize I needed a special program to write the file to the CD.

I've also tried both the mpeg1 and mpeg2 formats.

Thanks.

Hi,

That would indeed be your problem. Do you have any CD writing
programs, one probably came with your CD-RW drive or your computer?
Something called Nero or Easy CD creator or WinON CD?

Thanks.

Aaaagh! I'm still having problems.

I went out and purchased Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator, but still am
having problems. The video comes out with lots of tiling.

Using Roxio, I ran the "DVD Builder" module and imported the Video-CD
file (in NTSC format) that I had created using the TMPGEnc program.
The Video-CD file that was created, according the TEMGEnc, is an mpeg1
file. The Video-CD mpeg1 file, according to the Roxio documentation,
is a standard file.

Roxio does have an option to create a Super-Video CD file that would
be mpeg2. I'll give that a try, but I don't understand why using
Roxio to import the avi file created by TMPGEnc still doesn't work.

P.S.: When I'm using Roxio, I get an error message saying the file
may not display correctly on my TV. Details of the error message
indicate somethign is wrong with the audio bitrate and video bitrate,
but I don't what settings I am supposed to use and where I change
them.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Thank you for your clarification.

I've found a few guides for you with all the information you need.

This guide details all the settings for TMPGEnc:

This guide shows how to repair a MPEG file for writing to VCD:

Repair MPEG
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/faq.htm#repairmpg

This guide shows how to write a VCD using Easy CD (although I fear it
might be outdated, it should still be similar)

Creating a VCD with Easy CD

If you need any help with any of these, or require any further
clarifications or still have problems, please do not hesitate to ask,
I'll be more than happy to help out.

Thanks.
