can I add a second version of XP as a "user" I currently have 2
running separately, and administrating antivirus plus constantly
shutting down and re-booting is not ideal

Hi imaturnip,

I don't think you can have a complete separate operating system
installation for a different user. It is possible to have different
languages for different users, but this requires some additional
software. It will only work if the base language is English and it
only works with certain versions of Windows, including XP Professional
Edition, but not XP Home Edition. Also, the software is not sold as a
retail product, so you would have either to get it through some kind
of corporate or volume license or to get an OEM version with some kind
of hardware. Would information about this software be a satisfactory
answer to your question?

Hi imaturnip,

In addition to the software I described before, I have found another
product which is similar to the one embers described. It enables you
to run two different operating systems at the same time, at the cost
of some performance. So you would be able to switch between English
and Chinese without even logging off, but it might slow down your
system. It's a commercial product available at retail, not a free
download from MSDN. It wouldn't strictly answer your question because
it doesn't involve different user identities, but it might meet your
need. Also, as endo noted, each system would be in its own separate
world, and you wouldn't be able to administer one from the other.

So now I have outlined two possible solutions, each with different
drawbacks. The first one lets different users use different languages
on the same system, but the licensing may be bothersome. The second
one has easy licensing, but doesn't work with different users as your
question specified and is likely to slow down your computer. Would
details about either of these be a satisfactory answer to your
question?

We use a virtual windows system that allows you to run many versions
of windows on a single primary windows system. This allows us to have
a complete test environment on a single PC (95,98,ME,2000, XP).
Performance is about 80% of a primary installation (so what). The
virtual PC system is available as a free download to MSDN subscribers.
Assuming you have the language version of XP then you could install in
one of your virtual windows.

Hi,

MSDN is Microsoft Developer Network, developers get access to a lot of
extra downloads and regularly receive CDs containing all the latest
Microsoft software.

Virtual means that you run Windows XP in Chinese within your English
installation of Windows XP or vice-versa.

However this will not help with the fact that you still have two
different installations and that you have to administrate antivirus
separetely. However you won't need to reboot. Do you want more
information about this?

Thanks.
endo
