Oddly enough, you may note however that on this same CBS News source
quotes the Vatican as saying:

In terms of the precise number of countries visited by the Pope, both
of these reports appear to be incorrect and/or outdated. The most
precise information appears to come from press releases issued on or
about October 16, 2003 which quote basically the same statement in
every instance: ?To date, Pope John Paul II has visited 129 countries
on 102 foreign trips?:
