Hi, sageworksinc-ga!
I use an online site called Broadband Reports.com to test the speed
of my wireless connection. It will work for your T1 line as well.
1. To access the site, go to http://www.dslreports.com/ .
2. On the left-hand sidebar, in bold blue letters, there is a link
called "Our Tools".
3. When you click on "Our Tools", it will take you to the following page:
http://www.dslreports.com/tools
There are various tests you can run on this page, but the one you
want is called "Speed Tests". "Test your line performance, both upload
speed and download speed, from several locations
4. Click on the "Speed Test" link, and it will bring you to the following page:
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
On this page, you will notice several different servers to test your
connection speed.
Depending on where you are located, you will have to choose the one for you.
If you live in the United States, click on any of the applicable links on the page
5. If you live in a country other than the United States, you can
click on the bottom link that says: "Show 212 speedtest sites ordered
by location."
The page will come up here: http://www.dslreports.com/stest?more=1
6. From this page, click on the link for your country and run the test.

Note: You will need the Java Sun Plugin to run the Speed Tests. If you
don't have the plugin, you won't see the box necessary to start the
test.
Q: JAVA Applets do not work (#5160)
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/5160
A: This is the most frequently asked question. On the windows
platform, the Java support seems frequently to become unstable. The
result is that an applet that loaded OK before, no longer loads.
If rebooting and/or clearing your browser cache does not solve the
problem then read on:
The easiest thing to do is to update the microsoft Java virtual
machine and replace it with the official, Sun Java one. This can be
done by visiting
http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html. Don't worry, the update is easy.
For Macintosh, with Mac OS X, both Internet Explorer and Mozilla with
the current Java version, apparently work OK.
==
Unfortunately, the tweak test I mentioned will not work with a T1
line, but that is more for optimization.
==
Let me know if this works for you! Computers are DEFINITELY not my
specialty but this testing service is one I have used regularly since
I switched to wireless.
Sincerely,

sageworksinc,
Most all of the interenet connection speed tests are done from online
websites. However, if you prefer software, I have found three that
test connection speeds. There are many software products that work to
"optimize" connection speed, but you have asked specifically for
software that "tests" the speed of your connection.
The following recommendations come with no guarantees, since I do not
use them myself. I still think that internet testing sites are the
best, and I have posted one more site down below that you can try,
called the "Bandwidth Speed Test." Take a look at it and give it a try
if you want, since they do mention that you should be able to access
it from Africa, though the results may not be as accurate.
Here are some software options:

SPEED UP MY PC SOFTWARE from LIUtilities

Why Do We Need a Speed Test?
"The first step towards improving your connection is being able to
measure your connection speed at any time. There are many ways test
your Internet speed; for example, you could use one of the numerous
online speed tests that are available for free.
** A better solution, if you are planning to test your connection more
frequently would be to use software that allows you to monitor
connection speeds.
SpeedUpMyPC makes it very easy to monitor bandwidth usage in realtime
and can also measure your connection speed at any time. The real-time
bandwidth graphs are very useful when you are trying to optimize your
connection, because you can easily spot problems like unused bandwidth
and slow servers. Since SpeedUpMyPC keeps the bandwidth data for up to
60 minutes you can also keep track of the long-term bandwidth usage
and find unwanted Internet traffic within minutes. SpeedUpMyPCs
integrated Internet speed test allows you to test the connection speed
between your computer and any web server on the Internet. By
connecting to a site hosted by a server close to your geographical
location, you can often get very accurate results that can easily be
used to monitor performance, while you change various Internet
settings to improve performance."
Automatic Optimizations:
"If you are not a networking expert, SpeedUpMyPC can also help you
apply the most common optimizations with a few clicks. SpeedUpMyPC
detects your connection type and will automatically calculate and
apply the optimal settings for your particular connection, whether
it's an old modem or a high-speed fiber connection.
** After applying the automatic optimizations, you can use
SpeedUpMyPC's speed test to check your Internet speed, making it easy
to tell which optimizations are the most efficient."

** Notice that on the feature overview, there is the internet testing
option that you want include in this optimization software:
"Test you Internet connection and detect your current Internet speed at any time."

==============
Speed-O-Meter
==============
http://www.regnow.com/softsell/nph-softsell.cgi?item=4496-1&affiliate=15602
"Speed-O-Meter is a program that measures the TCP/IP speed of all
interfaces on your machine including network adapters and modems. Use
it to test your internet connection speed! It displays the TRUE
transmission speed and does not average it like IE. Use Improve speed
feature to optimize your registry settings to increase your TCP/IP
speed."
FAQ's

=======================
ANY SPEED 1.3 Shareware
=======================
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194055.html
"This program reports the speed of your connection in a graphical
format. You can also perform speed tests on local drives, including
your CD-ROM."
It can be used to test T1 connections as well.

One other online test that you might want to try:
====================
Bandwidth Speed Test
=====================
http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
From the FAQ's:
How does my location affect the test?
"Our test server is located in Texas, United States. The more networks
that the data has to cross, the more factors other than your
connection will contribute to the result. Users in Europe, Asia,
Africa, and South America will have less accurate (often lower)
results until we add servers closer to you."

I hop you find success with one of these!
