Please provide 3 vendors' information if possible. Thanks.

Hello Endo,

"Manufacturer Part Number N87C196KC20 "

This one looks very close to what we are looking for. Can you provide
a bit more information on it? Pricing, packaging, etc. I will then
verify this with our customer. Thank you.

I will verify this information with my customer on Monday. I suppose
you will let me know the vendor information afterwards?

Hi,

Yes as soon as you've confirmed this is what you want, I'll give you
the vendor information.

I've also found a distributor in China with N87C196KC-20 in stock.
Unfortunately I do not have a price for it.

Thanks.

Hi again,

I've found another US vendor with the following parts in stock:

87C196KC-20-INT-PLCC-DP(PROGRAMMED) and N87C196KC20

I've requested a quote but I do not know the price at the moment.
Minimum order is $500.

Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, why did you look for a distributor in China?

Would you happen to know if this chip is allowed to export the U.S.?
Thanks for your help.

Request for Question Clarification by endo-ga on 07 Dec 2003 12:59 PST
Hi,

I wasn't looking for a distributor in China, I was looking for a
distributor of the chip and I found one in China. :)

I would assume that you're allowed to export the chips to anywhere
except where forbidden by US trade sanctions and laws. For instance
you wouldn't be able to export to Cuba, Lybia or North Korea.

Thanks.

Very interesting. So were you able to find a distributor in the U.S.?
I'm not sure if there's a big difference between a vendor and a
distributor within the U.S.

I would like to know the Chinese distributor name also if it's ok.
Thanks for the great work!

Hi,

I found two US companies with the item in their product list. One of
them doesn't have any stock but lets you take orders and displays the
prices I gave you. The other one has stock but you need to make a
request to obtain a quote. I've made a request for 100 pieces, I'll
see how much they quote for the item.

I'll give you everything I've found, including the Chinese
distributor, once you confirm that we're looking at the right chip,
wouldn't want to post an answer pointing you at wrong information.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Thanks.

Hello endo,

I verified with my customer and he says it is PLCC 648; there's indeed
a number 4. Can you do a little more research on this? or check with
the vendors? Thanks.

Request for Question Clarification by endo-ga on 08 Dec 2003 07:04 PST
Hi,

Sorry I can't find any evidence of such a chip, either in data specs
or even less at a vendor.

Also having 648 pins on such a small and old chip is very doubtful
(that's what PLCC 648 means, PLCC tells you of the packaging of the
chip and 648 is the number of pins). The only packaging in PLCC form
of that chip is PLCC 68. It also comes in SQFP and MQFP packaging with
80 pins.

I don't want to get you in an argument with your client, but could you
please request for a sample chip maybe and examine it yourself? Or
gently suggest that such a packaging seems unrealistic and that they
check with their technician or engineer? I'm guessing there may have
been a typo along the way, the technical person who gave this to your
client may have made a mistake.

Thanks.

Hi tlimg,

Thank you for your question.

Here are the possible dealers I've found so far.

If you search

Digikey
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?KeywordSearch
for
87C196 KC20

You'll find:

Manufacturer Part Number TN87C196KC20
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?Ref=271791&Row=127334&Site=US

Manufacturer Part Number N87C196KC20
http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?Ref=271791&Row=127333&Site=US

Search for 87C196KC20 on:
http://www.usbid.com/index.cfm

You need to register to ask for a quote for purchse. I asked for a
quote and they replied with the following:

"We have 600 pieces of pre-programmed PLCC parts available. Price for
100 pieces is $5.00 each."

Minimum order is $500 with them.

This distributor has them in stock. Just look for 87C196KC20 on the page.

Hobid
http://www.hobid.com/inventory/T/8.html

Inspire has 8 of them in stock, search for 87C196KC20.

Inspire Electronics
http://www.inspirelectronics.com/WebHome.aspx

Doom has several versions in stock, search for 87C196KC20, datasheets
are available if you sign up.

Doom
http://www.doom.com/

These people may be able to help:

Bell Microproducts, hard to find parts
http://www.bellmicro.com/bellsource/bellsource.asp

This Chinese vendor has N87C196KC-20 in stock
http://www.buy-ic.com/gb/monopoly/icshop/a0094/over.asp?id=64608&NoCache=%2E259823

This vendor doens't have them in stock, but might carry them at one point.

Rock Technology Marketing
http://www.rocktechnology.com/index.html

Here is a technical document regarding that series of chip:

http://www.intel.com/design/mcs96/manuals/27297302.pdf

Here is a document with several chips of that type and a short
specification regarding the chip we're looking at:

http://dkc3.digikey.com/pdf/T033/0339-0340.pdf

You will notice that none of the chips have anywhere near 648 pins,
and that generally, PLCC is less than 100 pins.

Sorry Google Answers doesn't allow the disclosure of any personal
contact details. Also all research must be made publicly available.

I hope this answers your question, if you require any clarifications,
please do not hesitate to ask. If you get any feedback from your
customer pointing in a different direction, please let me know and
I'll have another look.

Thanks.

Hello endo,

Do you know if Intel distributors would have this product in stock? I
looked all the sites/vendors you listed, it seems that most of them
don't have a large stock of this specific chip. Are there any other
internet electronic components sites you know of?

Any additional information you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Clarification of Answer by endo-ga on 08 Dec 2003 18:03 PST
Hi,

Some of these are official Intel distributors. Digikey is very
reputable, if you specify an amount they should be able to get them.

USBid has 600 pieces in stock. How many are you thinking of?

Thanks.

I didn't realize some of them were official Intel distributors. I will
call them tomorrow to inquire about it.

My customer is looking to buy more than 1000 pieces.

Clarification of Answer by endo-ga on 08 Dec 2003 18:43 PST
Hi,

I actually started with the list of official Intel distributors, most
of them only stocked end-user products.

I would recommend you try Digikey and USBid.

If you need any more help, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks.

Thanks for checking in. I registered and submitted RFQ with Digikey
and USBid, and am waiting for their replies. Doom requires a $500
annual membership fee.

I'm currently working with my customer to get a definite answer on the
order quantity. I plan to call these vendors in the next two days.

Clarification of Answer by endo-ga on 09 Dec 2003 10:35 PST
Hi,

USBid were very good and got back to me within 24 hours.

Registration on Doom is half price now, so depending on the price they
quote and the price you get quoted elsewhere, maybe $300 might be
worth it.

Anyways please let me know how it goes, and if you require anymore assistance.

Thanks.

Hi endo,

I haven't had much success with any of the vendors. Do you know of a
place where I can post my request so that potential vendor/rep. can
contact me? Website, magazine or newspaper? Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that.

I'm surprised that neither Digikey nor USBid were able to help you?

Please try contacting Arrows Electronics, they buy directly from
Intel, so may be able to order the parts for you.

Arrow sales representative: 1-877-237-8621

Please try The Electronic Goldmine:

Phone: 1-800-445-0697
Site: http://www.goldmine-elec.com/

You could also try Jameco:

Email: custservice@Jameco.com
Phone: 1-800-831-4242.

PartsExpress can be contacted on:

Phone: 1-800-338-0531.
Site: http://www.partsexpress.com/

Although they do not list the part in their inventory they have large
catalogues, so may have the ressources needed to source the parts for
you.

I hope this helps.

Thanks.
