Hi angorpectoris!

There are not a lot of information of this configuration on the
Internet.
More sources talk about Bluetooth enable on the phone, but your
Motorola T280 hasn´t it.
Don´t worry I found a document explaining how you can do the
conecction that you need.
At the LUX.GMS (a Mobile Phone Services Company of Luxemburgo)
LUX.GMS
SOS page
"Configuration de votre GSM" paragraph
http://www.luxgsm.lu/sos/main-sos-faq.htm#gprs

Now select your phone model from the "Sélectionnez votre modèle de
GSM" menu.
You can choose the following mobile phone models:
Ericsson R520, Ericsson T39, Ericsson T65, Ericsson T68, Motorola
Accompli 008, Motorola Timeport 260, Motorola Timeport 280, Motorola
V66, Nokia 8310, Nokia 6310, Nokia 6510, Nokia 8910, Samsung SGH-Q200,
Siemens ME45 and Siemens S45.

Selecting Motorola Timeport 280 you will guide to the Time port
configurations section, choose the following question, asked by
someone who was thinking on you :):
"How to connect your Motorola Timeport 280 to your Compaq iPAQ via
infrared ?"
And a PDF document will be showed to you explaining what do you must
to do.
http://www.luxgsm.lu/files/timeport280/T280_Ipaq_Ir_en.pdf

Another, but generic explanation, can be found in the Optus (an
Australian Telecommunication Services Company)web site
Optus
Mobile Services
Bussiness Solutions
Information on your mobile
GPRS setup instructions-Compaq iPAQ page:
http://www.optus.com.au/Vign/ViewMgmt/display/0,2627,1007_21049-3_6726--View_204,00.html

Finally I found a page with a graphical explanation of the
configuration of the IPaq to connect to the Internet through the IR-
port.
The original is in russian language, but I can give you the translated
version:
http://babel.altavista.com/translate.dyn?doit=done&BabelFishFrontPage=yes&enc=utf8&bblType=url&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ipaq.com.ua%2Fipaq_gprs_irda.htm&lp=ru_en

I hope that one of this three guides helps you.

Thanks for your effort livio. Not very specific, but at least I am one
step closer with the last link in your answer.

This site I had found, but it is useless to me, since I don't live in
Luxemburg, nor I am interested in using an Internet Provider in that
Country.
