Need to know which to pick and find out more about the prerequisites
and preparation in as specific a process as possible.

Hello dustydune-ga,

The Balanced Scorecard has become quite popular in the last few years
and there are lots of resources available to help you determine how to
proceed. I?ve collected a variety of resources that should help you
identify the processes and planning steps involved, the
appropriateness of specific software products and how to set goals to
achieve your desired outcomes.

Implementing a program like this is a complex process and you will
have to specify your own needs to be able to determine how to go about
implementing this process. The resources I?ve collected will help you
gain an understanding of the issues involved and once you?re clear on
your needs you will be able to decide whether reading some books and
white papers will be sufficient to begin. You might also choose to
attend some training on the subject or hire a consultant to help you.
I?ve provided some resources for all of these possible options.

I?ve also found a technology report that is rather pricy but reviewing
the table of contents will at least give you a grasp of the scope of
the industry and practice areas for implementing this program.

I wish you well for your implementation and increased success for your
business as a result.

Use the End-In-Mind Approach in Implementing a Scorecard

Executives and managers are thrilled with the promise of the strategic
process offered by a balanced scorecard. This same excitement that
sparks the initiative is also the biggest threat to its successful
implementation. Eager executives and managers pressure the
implementation team to produce relevant results quickly. Conflicting
with this anticipation is the assurance that the scorecard provides
minute details in all departments. For the inexperienced, this set of
expectations can lead to lackluster results - overly detailed
scorecards, massive data collection processes and long implementation
times. To complicate this initial scorecard further, the natural
progress of the project unearths latent strategic issues that may slip
through the cracks. An end-in-mind project management process with
facilitation can safeguard the results and maintain the enthusiasm.

FEBRUARY 17, 2003 -- ROI Guide: Balanced Scorecard

Definition: A set of principles and analytic techniques for improving
an organization's performance in four general areas: financials,
customers, learning and internal processes.

What it means: Long-term organizational excellence can be achieved
only by taking a broad and holistic approach, not by focusing solely
on financials.
Strengths: This approach is potentially all-encompassing, combining
financial and non-financial goals and measures. It can encompass the
performance of entire companies or business units, not just individual
investments or projects. Balanced scorecard is future-oriented, not a
rearview mirror on performance.

Weaknesses: This method is potentially so broad that it may divert
resources from those few areas that really are vital to shareholder
return. It doesn't readily weight the relative importance of the
different metrics it uses.

I would also suggest you visit www.bscol.com for a listing of
certified Balanced Scorecard Software Vendors. You'll see a mix of
vendors there ranging from those dedicated to Performance Management /
Measurement such as:
1) performancesoft Inc. (www.performancesoft.com)
2) Corvu (www.corvu.com)
and those who have added a Performance Management module onto their
existing BI or ERP solutions such as
1) Cognos
2) Hyperion
3) Oracle

Most, if not all of these vendors will offer both software and
associated services. I found by contacting the vendors directly that
you can get a better understanding of what is required regarding
prerequisites and preparation.
