We use Outlook Express 6.0. There are 3 of us using 3 separate
laptops. Two of us have private identities, and one of us answers a
general email/ customer
service identity. A copy of the email is saved on the server for 3
days. All 3 of us check the mail in the customer service identity.
We have had a problem where someone will try to check the customer
service identity. The mail will start to download and the computer
will lock up hard. You will not be able to use Cntrl Alt Dlt you will
be forced to turn off the computer with the power button. Sometimes
the problem will affect all three of us, sometimes it will only affect
1 or 2 of us.
The way we have solved the problem in the past is to have someone
who is unaffected create a new identity that is set up to not save a
copy of the email on the server. This person will download all of the
mail off of the server and then the people who were freezing will be
able to download any new mail normally. We are all running Windows
XP, and use Norton Anti virus 9, and Zone Alarm 3.1395
We would like to continue to use Outlook Express in the future but not
have this problem. |

Hi,
How often does this happen and in what circumstances? e.g. are all of
you trying to download the email at the same time?
Do you run the email server yourself or is this the email server of
your ISP? If you run it yourself, what software are you using?
Have you noticed any similarities with the emails that cause this behavior?
How about if you have the server automatically forward that email to
three different addresses, one for each laptop?
Thanks.

It happens on an irregular basis, it may be weeks in between
occurrances, sometimes longer. there does not seem to be a
relationship between who is downloading and we normally don't try to
download at the same time. That would be highly unlikely. Our server
is running Linux.
The emails are sometimes from customers, sometimes spam, sometimes
viruses, no pattern there.
We would like to try and resolve the problem without forwarding to 3
different accounts if that is possible.

Hi,
I have a suggestion:
Each users' identity may be damaged. If it's the default Main Identity,
it's much more corruption-prone than a Named Identity. Try one or more of
the accounts in a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity).
Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity before deleting
it (File>Identities>Manage Identities).
Please let me know how it goes.
Thanks.

A good thought. However, the last time it froze on the computer of
the girl who uses it as her main identity, I did create a new identity
for her and it got stuck in the same place.

Hi,
Can you please disable Norton Virus scanning on emails?
How to enable or disable email scanning in Norton AntiVirus 2002/2003/2004
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001082921552806
That page even implies that it's not very useful.
Please let me know how it goes.
Thanks.

This looks like something we could try the next time the problem
occurs. After it freezes initially, we could turn off email scan and
see if it allowed the mail to load. Do you agree? I think since the
problem is intermittent, it makes more sense to let it occur, and see
if this works, rather than disable it now, and assume that it has
worked, only to find that the problem just hasn't come up in a while.
Do you agree?

Hi,
Yes that sounds sensible, but we run the risk of totally forgetting about it :)
Anyways please try it and let me know how it goes.
Thanks.
