I'm looking for the name and composer of a string piece, and a list of
in-print CDs on which it appears. During the 1984 movie "Splash", we
hear this music while Madison is looking at the fountain that she
eventually buys for Allen. The music appears to be uncredited in the
movie.

That is indeed an excellent piece of music. I haven't heard it in a
while, but isn't it an interlude to the piece "Love Came to Me" that
is sung in the movie?

Actually, I may be thinking of a different section of the movie. Is
this the same music that is played while Madison swims under the sea
to find a map in an old ship(?) and looks at Alan's wallet contents?

My wife has a better memory of this than me - it's been a while since
we've seen the movie. She says that you are referring to a different
piece. What we are interested in is played first in a music box that
Allen gives to Madison, and then segues into strings in the scene I
described originally.

Sorry, richard-ga. I don't know the name of the piece. Maybe it is
on the album, but soundtracks often don't have every piece from the
movie.

Is it the classical piece performed by the two(?) violinists outside,
where I believe Madison and Alan walk by?

I have put some feelers out to some places that might know. I'll let
you know if they respond. In the meantime, are you interested in the
piece's title and composer as an answer to your question?

Yes, I'll accept the composer and title as an answer. If you learn of
any CDs, please let me know!

Thanks.

Hello dan555-ga,

The name of the song featured in the movie Splash is:

Adagio Piano 6C Concerto Nº2
  by Frédéric (or Fryderyk) Chopin

A glance at the All Music Guide (one of the foremost online
information sources for all music) shows many adagios, but I'm not
readily finding that specific song. You can try searching there at
this link:

I'm awaiting contact Arkiv Music (www.arkivmusic.com), which seems to
be a very extensive source of classical music recordings and
information, and I will post any information they supply.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Search strategy:
  Information is direct from the
  Buena Vista production company

This may be helpful:

"I bought this album because it contains a piece I have long searched
for. In the old movie, 'Splash', there is a scene in which a music box
containing tiny dancing figurines plays a lovely theme, which is then
taken up and played in a variation for violins. This theme is the
'Romance' of the Chopin piano concerto #1. It is sublimely rendered in
this edition, and a delight to listen to the delicate cascades and
flirtations. The entire collection, really, is a joy to hear again and
again with its intricate and graceful themes."

Although I wonder if she labels it correctly. The information I
received is directly from the producers of the film.

We found samples of the Chopin Piano Concerto #1, Opus 11 in several
places, and it's indeed the right piece. THanks everyone!

The notation in the title that you got from the production company is
a bit strange, but it led us in the right direction.
