My Laptop with windows XP freezes on shut down and if you try to
hibernate it comes back with an error that the driver for COM 1 is not
allowing the system to hibernate.  I have checked the drivers and
found that according to the system they are not in need of updating. 
If I disable the COM 1 port I get the same error only for a different
port.

this happens if you have Quicken installed. Please follow the steps
described.
