What type of scan it is used for and why?
-----------------------------------------
Radioimmunoscintigraphy is the type of scan for which monoclonal
antibody isotopes are used. This type of scan has been shown to be
more effective than some other techniquies in detecting certain types
of cancer (e.g., ovarian).
"Radioimmunoscintigraphy or monoclonal antibody (MAb) imaging
involves the administration of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies
directed against specific molecular targets, followed by imaging with
a nuclear medicine external gamma camera. MAbs that react with
specific cellular antigens are conjugated with a radiolabeled isotope.
The labeled antibody-isotope conjugate is then injected into the
patient and allowed to localize to the target over a two to seven day
period. The patient then undergoes whole-body imaging with a nuclear
medicine gamma camera, and radioisotope counts are analyzed. Imaging
can be performed with planar techniques or by using single-photon
emission computed tomography (SPECT). Arcitumomab (CEA Scan),
Nofetumomab Merpentan (Verluma), Satumomab Pendetide (OncoScint®),
Indium-111 Pentetreotide (OctreoScan®), and Capromab Pentetide
(ProstaScint®) are monoclonal antibody imaging agents that have been
FDA-approved for tumor localization."

"Ovarian Cancer
Radioimmunoscintigraphy has been investigated as a technique to select
patients for second look laparotomy after initial treatment for
ovarian cancer. The positive predictive value is reported to be 97% to
80%, which is higher than conventional imaging with CT or MRI."
