Hello archbishop2000 and thank you for your question.

In reply to your question "who provides the search results for BBCi ?"
The answer is, Google provides the search technology.
With BBCi there are three search choices. 1. search just BBC web sites
2. Search BBC news sites 3. Search the web using Google, but more
importantly, the Google search of the web is supplemented by websites
that have been individually included by BBCi editors because of their
popularity in relation to a particular search term. For example if
you sell insurance and you're website is listed highly under the
search term "insurance" with search engines], it is possible that a
BBCi editor will include the site in the BBCi "BBCi Recommended" list.
The important thing to remember is that you cannot 'submit' your site
for inclusion in the BBCi recommended list, you must make sure that
your site is optimized for search engine "friendliness" and then it
will hopefully get noticed by a BBCi editor. See below for further
information:

"BBCi Search does not accept submissions or requests. Our team bases
its research on popular search terms and conducts an independent
evaluation of available websites."

"The search function on the extremely popular BBC web site. Three
types of results are presented for a search under different tabs. The
first tab is results from BBC web sites. The second tab is from BBC
news. The third tab is from the web as a whole with results coming
from Google and supplemented with BBCi recommended sites"

The site, described as "free from commercial pressures and safe from
undesirable sites" is an outgrowth of BBCi's charter to "act as a
trusted guide to the Web" for UK residents. Though powered by Google,
results are delivered with a hierarchical preference given to the most
relevant UK websites. Users can also limit results to UK only sites.

In addition to Google powered search results, the BBCi editorial staff
has compiled a list of "recommended" sites, adding a small but useful
directory component to the search service. According to the site's
FAQ, BBCi editors recommend websites that:

"BBCi Search Search Engine Advice"
"The BBC does not accept site submissions and cannot get your site
listed by any search engine. If you want to get your site listed by a
range of search engines, including BBCi Search, there are a number of
routes you can try."

"BBCi Recommended Websites"
"We evaluate all our recommendations against the following 10-point checklist:
1. The overall quality of the website must match or exceed expectation.

2. There must be a broad variety of information and services.

3. It must meet the needs of a UK audience.

4. The news section and time-sensitive features must be up-to-date.

5. Information on the website must be authoritative and accurate.

6. Good design. It must be easy to navigate and be clear what it contains.

7. All links, images, multimedia elements and services must work correctly.

8. It must conform to BBC guidelines on decency and social responsibility.

9. Links to other websites must also conform to BBC guidelines on decency.

10.The website must provide information or services beyond its
commercial purpose. Recommended sites must meet BBC requirements to
'educate, entertain or inform'."

Dear archbishop2000

I now realise that BBCi changed from using Google to Inktomi a few
months ago. I'm sorry for giving you the wrong information, and I
have notified the Google editors to remove my answer.

I'm very sorry for giving you the wrong information.

Very best regards

Dear archbishop2000-ga/anonymous2-ga

I do not mean to be rude, in any way at all. However, I must have the
authority to post a new (and impoved!) answer for archbishop2000-ga as
s/he was the original poster of the question, and anonymous2-ga was
seemingly only a commentator! I would be more than happy to help if
archbishop2000-ga (The original asker of the question) could state
that "The answer post clarification still gave me a lot of useful
information."

Very best regards

Can i suggest you re-submit, as far as i can see you have included
some excellent information about BBCi that was not made irrelevant by
the Google/Inktomi issue. The answer post clarification still gave me
a lot of useful information.
