Hello, Beez,

Sidney Frank, legendary alcoholic beverage importer, saw an
opportunity in the ultra-premium vodka category and went to France to
the Gente Springs area, in the Cognac region, on a tasting mission. He
ended up choosing a vodka made from the grain grown in the area, and
named it Grey Goose. Frank has gained great renown for his marketing
ability -- the ability to find a good alcoholic beverage product and
make it great through naming, packaging, branding and skillful
promotion. Besides Grey Goose, he's known for developing the
Jagermeister brand into "the third largest selling imported liqueur in
the United States, through innovative marketing strategies," according
to the company's Web site.

The only reference I've been able to find to Frank's reasoning behind
the name is an article from a local news source in the area where he
lives. It says: "Frank called the vodka Grey Goose, the name a close
friend suggested because it 'rolled off the tongue.'"

This article on trademarks says that the name has no special meaning:

"Fanciful trademarks ? are 'coined' terms that had no meaning before
being trademarks. Exs: KODAK, STARBUCKS, VERIZON, POLAROID, EXXON

Arbitrary trademarks ? are common words used in a unique way so that
the word has no relationship to the product. Exs: APPLE and SUN for
computers, AMAZON and YAHOO! For Internet sites, GREY GOOSE for
vodka."

Starbucks is named for Captain Ahab's first mate in Moby Dick.

I see a clear relationship between the world's largest river and the
website that aims eventually to sell everything that can be sold.
