Question ID: 286159
How do I configure Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise
Edition with a single Windows domain, but multiple email domains
without having to keep the default email address? The windows domain
is HOME.SKIPFIRE.COM, the email domains are SKIPFIRE.COM (default),
4EverNetworks.com, PeaceLCG.com, C21CORNERREALTY.COM and
Century21CornerRealty.com. Every time I delete the @SKIPFIRE.COM
address for a user I get a mailbox unavailable error when sending that
account email. A satisfactory answer will have a step by step guide
for configuration Exchange, non-default configuration of Windows 2003
or Windows domain, and any policy modifications necessary. The answer
can assume that Windows 2003 is installed, the HOME.SKIPFIRE.COM
domain is configured and active, Exchange 2003 is installed, and the
recipient of the answer has full permissions to all parts of the
system.

The problem is not realated to MX records or knowing how to configure
the user accounts to have the correct email addresses. The problem is
that if the default address of xyz@SkipFire.com is removed then the
account responds externally with a MailBox Unavailable error, but
works for email from other internal domains.

I do have an active directory domain (HOME.SKIPFIRE.COM, no email on
this domain). In the default policy all of the listed domains do have
the box checked for "This Exchange server is responsible for all mail
delivery to this address". All the domains are registered and I do
have an appropriate MX record for all the domains.

The error occurs when sending mail from the outside world to a user
without an @SkipFire.com address. Other users in the same domain that
have an @SkipFire.com address work fine. The error comes from my
server and is a mailbox unavailable error. However, if I send the
email from domain hosted on the same box I do not get the error.

1. check mx records in dns for all the other domains (e.g.
4EverNetworks.com, PeaceLCG.com, C21CORNERREALTY.COM and
Century21CornerRealty.com) etc.

2. you can either recreate all address and use a new address template
per user that automatically generates for all users or you can add the
new address per smtp domain per user.

I like a person who knows what he wants and orders with confidence so
here it goes .
Since we can assume u have AD and exchange running then u are almost
there. What u have to remember is that exchange domain (email
domain)can be the same as ur AD domain or diffrent and like ur active
directory ur exchange server can handle as many email domains as u
like. But in order for this to happen u must make sure to check a
little box in ur policy for that email domain that states "this
exchange server is responsible for mail delivery for thsi Address'.U
must also remember that exchange will aleays send mail out under
primary address that u have assigned to EACH USER.U must also remember
that inorder for u to recieve mail for these domains u must have them
registerd and an MX record be created by ur isp which will point to ur
public ip address which should be nated to ur internal exchange
servers ip address.
U must also remember that ur internal DNS servers handle ur requests
based on the zones that they are responsible for.U must also remember
that each users email address by default is updated based on the
recipient policies that u apply to them(so if u delete an email
address it will come back automatically if it is part of the recipient
policy being applied to that user).
Now u tell us how do u get this error? Is it when u send internally or
when u send an external email to that user?Do call back.

Email Address Generation:
Load Exchange System Manager
Expand your Organization
Expand Recipients
Select Recipient Policies
Double Click Default Policy
Select the E-Mail Addresses (Policy) tab

Add your domain names:
Click New
Select SMTP
Click OK
Enter an address i.e. %g.%s@4EverNetworks.com (This will do
forename.surname@4EverNetworks.com)
Ensure the checkbox for 'This Exchange Organizaition is responsible
for all mail delivery to this address' is checked.
Click OK
Repeat for each domain

To remove the @skipfire.com domain just uncheck the box in the generation rules
You must select a default SMTP instead though.
