Is it reasonable to assume that you're already familiar with the
materials on Steps 1,2 and 3 at the USMLE website itself? For
example:

http://www.usmle.org/step1/s1nervs.htm

What additional sorts of materials would best meet your needs?

Are you trying to find online sources to help one prepare to take the
USMLE or are you looking for online sources that direct you to books
and other preparation guides that you can *buy* online and have sent
to you?

Hi there - do the materials need to be free? I've found a bunch of
question farms and other prep sites that you have to pay a fee to
access. You can probably tell that we're eager to help you with this
- we just need some more guidance. For instance, what of these would
be of interest:

Free sites only? Or pay/fee-based?
Question farms?
Test advice websites?
Tests from previous years?
Outlines?

Hi Sageworksinc,

I have collected about 20 links below to a variety of USMLE exam
preparation websites. While many of them offer free resources,
several are commercial/pay-for-service sites (like the big tutoring
companies Kaplan and Princeton Review). I've also included two
websites that review books and other non-web-based materials for exam
prep just in case you're interested in those.

To find these links I first went to the Google search engine and
searched for "USMLE Prep". This got me a lot of information, much of
it interlinked to the Kaplan and Exam Master websites (they have a lot
of affiliates). You might also try the Open Directory Project USMLE
category listings helpful (not all are listed below):
http://dmoz.org/Health/Medicine/Education/USMLE/

I've broken the links below into four major categories: Official USMLE
Websites, Free Sites, Commercial (Pay) Sites, and Book Reviews and
Recommendations.

If you need clarification on any of these links, please let me know
before leaving feedback. Otherwise, happy holidays and good luck with
your test prep and the exam!

Official USMLE Websites

US Medical Licensing Examination (TM) Official Website
http://www.usmle.org/
The official site includes a number of free resources for study,
including tutorials and practice questions for each step of the exam.
There is also extensive information on this site about the format of
each step, the content covered in each, and news and application
information.

National Board of Medical Examiners Self-Assessment Program
http://www.nbme.org/programs/sas.asp
The NBME administers the USMLE, so most of their materials point to
the USMLE website given above. However, they do offer a web-based
self-assessment tutorial for a cost of $45. "The material presented in
these self-assessments is provided by the NBME for educational
purposes only. US and International medical students and graduates may
find these self-assessments to be valuable tools as they prepare for
USMLE Step 1 and Step 2. Participants will be provided with immediate
feedback in the form of performance profiles which will indicate the
relative strengths and weaknesses in general topic areas."

Free Sites

Prep for USMLE
http://www.prep4usmle.com/
This site offers mainly free resources (tests, questions, tips,
forums) for the three steps and the CSA. There are also links to
commercial (fee-based) sites such as Kaplan Medical (see below).

USMLE for Medical Students
http://www.studentdoc.com/usmle.html
This site focuses on Steps 1 and 2, and is affiliated with the Kaplan
USMLE prep system (see below). It links to Kaplan-sponsored pages
that lead you to fee-based services and free services, as described in
the Kaplan Medical link above, as well as to other online review tools
and USMLE websites. The page for student study guides
(http://www.studentdoc.com/msrg_study.html) gives you links by
basic/clinical sciences topic to online tutorials from a variety of
academic institutions in the US and Canada.

USMLE Boards Readiness Links
http://medicine.creighton.edu/USMLE/
This is an invaluable collection of links to mainly free information
on the web, including tutorials and questions. Many of them are
focused on a specific topic (cancer, for example), so you'll want to
wander around a bit to see what's best for you.

MedStudent Cafe
http://www.medstudentcafe.com/usmle.htm
This site has lots of links to free and commercial sites, but the real
gems are the tips and hints in the "Articles about the USMLE" section.

MomMD.com
http://www.mommd.com/usmleindex.shtml
Again, the best information in this site comes under the "Strategies &
Tips" section, with some good information in the bulletin boards to
which there are links. Also includes links to free (mainly sample)
resources from Princeton Review and Kaplan (see below).

USMLE Guide
http://www.usmleguide.com/index.htm
This site has no practice questions, but does spend some time
outlining the subjects and weights of each section of the test.

ValueMD
http://www.valuemd.com/viewforum.php?f=12
The forums for Steps 1, 2, and 3 are a good place to go to get help
with particular questions that you might have problems with, or to ask
general questions of other students and doctors about the exam.

MSN Groups: Medical Professionals
http://groups.msn.com/MedicalProfessionals
This MSN group focuses on issues for students and clinicians,
including offering forums for discussing the USMLE Boards and
recommendations for book and/or software purchases of prep materials.

USMLE Forum
http://www.study4usmle.com/forum/
This forum focuses entirely on the USMLE and the CSA, and has
different threads for each step. It's a fairly small community - just
over 200 registered posters.

Commercial (pay) Sites

Kaplan Medical
http://www.kaptest.com/repository/templates/Lev2InitDroplet.jhtml?_lev2Parent=/www/KapTest/docs/repository/content/Medical_Licensing
Available on this site are materials for all three steps of the USMLE
as well as other licensing exams. Each step has some fee-based
materials, such as an intense prep course, question banks, and
reference materials for your laptop and/or your handheld. Prices
range from $999 for the intense course to $249 for three months of
access to the question bank to $25 for the Palm-enabled materials.
Also available are some free resources like a diagnostic exam and
several seminars.

Princeton Review
http://www.princetonreview.com/medical/testPrep/testprep.asp?TPRPAGE=40&TYPE=USMLE
The Online Course is $599 and includes their Online Workout - a
toolbox of questions and practice exams. You can subscribe to the
Workout on its own if desired ($149). Both are a three month
subscription. There's also a free online sample course that you can
take.

ExamMaster
http://www.exammaster.com/USMLE/index.html
This system ($299 for the complete package) is available online or in
CD-ROM format. It will get you not only practice tests (with just shy
of 8000 questions available) but also an explanation of why the
question should be answered with the correct answer, an analysis of
your strengths and weaknesses, and color images.

BoardsPrep - USMLE Medical Review Software
http://www.boardsprep.com/
This company offers a free sample test (50 questions), with an "unlock
code" that you can purchase for $45 for Step 1. Step 2 is not yet
available, and there appears to be no mention of Step 3 on the
website.

Internal Medicine Board Review Course and USMLE Course
http://www.usmlecourse.com/
This site is a members-only "course" to prep for Steps 2 and 3 of
USMLE. Membership is $39/year or $27/quarter. An overview of services
for USMLE prep (with some samples) is available at
http://www.usmlecourse.com/usmleexclusiveframe.htm

Usmile.us
http://www.usmile.us/
This company sells CD-ROM review materials for all three steps and the
CSA. Each CD-ROM has sample exams, review tutorial, practice
questions, and video clips. They are about $81 for all three CDs
(Steps 1,2,3).

USMLE Made Ridiculously Simple
http://www.usmle.net/
This site is set up by a doctor who is selling review books/CD-ROMs
for each of the steps and the CSA (about $30/book). There's also a
pretty active discussion forum.

Book Reviews and Recommendations

USMLE Books
http://www.mdlinks.net/books.htm
This is a list of test preparation books and CD-Roms that have been
recommended by the site. Most link directly to Amazon.com.

MedFools
http://www.medfools.com/boards.html
Another site full of recommendations of books and CD-Roms. There are
also a few free items, like charts for fungal infections, but you have
to really look for them.

Sageworksinc,

As I've noted in the comment below, I'm really unsure what it is you
need. Since my answer doesn't seem at all satisfactory to you, I'm
requesting it be pulled by the editors so someone else can try to help
you. If you're not looking for tips, questions, and outlines, what
are you looking for?

Just to note, most of these sites do give help for sections 2 and 3.
Also, the point of the Boards is to test the knowledge you should have
received in medical school (part 1 tests your preclinical studies,
part 2 your clinical studies, and part 3 your practice abilities).
Thus, you should at least have some knowledge of the materials before
even attempting the test. This is not a test like the MCAT, which
evaluates your aptitude for medical school. Is it possible we're not
both talking about the same test?

Hi Sageworksinc,

After conferring with Google Answers, we've decided not to have my
answer removed. Instead, can you give me more details on what exactly
you need? I'm happy to keep looking for precise information for you,
but I need a better idea of what exactly you need. Thanks!

Just also wanted to note that the online courses that I noted above
are available to anyone internationally, they cover all three tests,
and generally incorporate learning tutorials and "classes" on the
major topic areas so you can brush up on topics in which you feel
weak.

hello,
i ppreciate ur efforts but are there no sites i can and download free tutorials.
Do in have to pay for everything

Clarification of Answer by librariankt-ga on 19 Dec 2003 06:35 PST
While most of the tutorials available online are from the
pay-for-access sites (which you had initially indicated were not a
problem), there are a few that are from academic institutions and thus
free. Remember that these will be focused on specific topics that may
or may not be covered by the USMLE, and not on the test itself. They
are instead tutorials for the subject, not for the test. I'll
endeavor to give you a few examples for you to try.

Please note: Because steps 2 and 3 test practice ability, there are
not tutorials on the web for studying the skills needed in these
areas. You simply must have graduated from a clinical medical school
program and gained hands-on experience through that sort of study.
These steps are inherently different from Step 1, thus studying for
them will require different techniques.

Two of the links I gave you have further links to online tutorials:

USMLE for Medical Students
http://www.studentdoc.com/usmle.html
The page for student study guides
(http://www.studentdoc.com/msrg_study.html) gives you links by
basic/clinical sciences topic to online tutorials from a variety of
academic institutions in the US and Canada.

USMLE Boards Readiness Links
http://medicine.creighton.edu/USMLE/
This is an invaluable collection of links to mainly free information
on the web, including tutorials and questions. Many of them are
focused on a specific topic (cancer, for example), so you'll want to
wander around a bit to see what's best for you.

In addition, I found the following sites by doing a Google search for
"USMLE tutorials free".

University of South Dakota School of Medicine: USMLE Step 1 Review Sites on the Web
http://med.usd.edu/icm/spss/usmleweb.html

Daniel's USMLE and Medical School Websites
http://www.angelfire.com/ca6/usmlewebsites/
Scroll down a little and you'll get to quite a few links to tutorials
etc. on different subject areas.

Educational Internet Resources for Students (from the Lviv National
Medical University, Ukraine)
http://www.meduniv.lviv.ua/inform/studlinks.html#3

New York Emergency Room RN: Medical Cases and Tutorials

The Doctor's Lounge: Medical Tutorials & Articles
http://www.thedoctorslounge.net/studlounge/tutorials.htm

Assn for the Advancement of Minorities in Medicine: Learning Co-op
http://anams.unm.edu/index.php
This site has links to tutorials and other help pages for both basic
science and clinical science topics.

i have last year's version (on cd) of webprep pathology, pharmacology,
physiology gathering dust. I know I have four others (anatomy,...)
somewhere as well. they're not "internet" as you specified, but
nevertheless computer-based. They're yours if you can use them.
