I would like a bunch of statistics on Digital Cable and DTH (Direct To
Home, or Digital Sattelite) television distributors (also sometimes
referred to as "operators", or "platforms", for example UPC). Please
note that all questions refer to DIGITAL systems only, not Analogue.
The geographical area intended for all questions is mainland Europe,
excluding UK & Ireland, but including Russia, Turkey and Israel.
Here are the questions:
- Which DTH and/or Digital cable providers have the largest amount of
households subscribing(note: Not households passed). Please limit the
answers to the top 20 providers in terms of numbers of households
subscribing.
- Which set-top box technology and standard do these top providers use
(i.e Open, Liberate, Microsoft, etc).
- What are their projections for subscriber growth for the next 3-5 years ?
- How is this growth broken down by country/ territory for each provider |

Hi,
I think I've found a few studies that might interest you but they are not cheap.
1-) It costs ?1750 or £1250. It's called "Share of total digital cable
market by country 1996-2002". Also found "Digital Cable Market in
Europe, 1999?2005". You would need a subscription and a 30 day one is
$750.
2-) Found another report with exactly what you want for Western Europe
and digital cable. I could give you the list of market leaders
(usually two or three) per country for digital cable in Western
Europe. But not any statistics, since that would mean purchasing the
report which costs $1650.
3-) One more report: "European Digital Pay TV Platforms Market
Assessment and Forecasts to 2006. This essential guide will prove an
invaluable resource for cable, satellite and telecoms operators;
set-top box and hardware manufacturers; business analysts and
strategists and TV content and multimedia providers." Costs $1995.
4-) Here's some content from yet another report:
"Assessment of the state of digital TV development and opportunities
by platform ? cable, satellite and digital terrestrial
Detailed profiles of the digital TV environment in 14 national TV
markets, examining regional issues and plans, key players and
competitor strategies"
At ?4275 it seems a bit pricey though.
5-) This one might be the most interesting:
"This report brings together research on pay TV and the cable and
satellite TV platforms at the European level. Detailed
country-specific market information is available in the separate
country reports."
The interesting bit is the price: US$30.00.
In short, there are lots of relevant reports, and they cost a lot of
money, except for the last one. If you're interested in more
information about these reports, I could post the details as an
answer. However I cannot guarantee that you will like the contents.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks.

Hi and thanks,
Comments:
Report 1 appears to deal with Cable only and I need cable and DTH
(satellite), as stated in the question.
Report 2 looks like it is only cable as well, but please supply the
list from the report that you mentioned you could get access to.
Report 3 does look like what I am after but is far too expensive
Report 4 ditto
Report 5, yes it's only 30 so why not but it.

Hi,
Thank you for your clarification. I am unclear however if you will
accept the details of report 5 and the list detailed in report 2 as an
answer.
The list consists of the leaders in cable in the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands,
Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. But please note there
are no statistics, just a list of providers.
Sadly the type of market research you have asked for costs a lot of money.
Thanks.

Your assumptions are correct, I would be satisfied with the details of
report 5 and the list detailed in report 2 as an
answer.
