I would like a opinion: 1. Should one be worried if a nearly two year old child still does pronounce any words. ( when he is trying to speak it is impossible to understand anything at all............not one word, although one can clearly see that he is trying to say something he is thinking) 2. What are the options in helping the child in speeding up his ability in speech. He does not seem to have any hearing problems, he is a very stubborn little boy - does not like doing what he does not want,he will throw the absolute worst tantrums if he does not get his way. His mother seems very competent, and i can see no problems with her as a mother. In my opinon the boys stubborness is the problem, he wants to do what he wants to do, and stuff anybody else............ |

One thing to consider would be autism. This is characterized by problems with development of language and social skills, such as you are describing. Of course, it is impossible to make this diagnosis with such a brief description, but the boy should be evaluated by a pediatrician with some familiarity with developmental problems. Hopefully it is not autism at all, but this type of problem should definitely be looked into. |

Like ac67-ga, I admit that autism was the first thing that came to mind after reading your question. Of course, an evaluation by a pediatrician is important. Should it indeed be autism, there are many, many resources available for both the child and his family. Best of luck to you. Sincerely, Boquinha-ga |

Hi ac67, As long as the child makes eye contact, shows affection, and is otherwise happy, I wouldn't get too hung up on autism. Some kids speak early, some speak late. Our first son didn't start talking until nearly 3 years old - he is perfectly fine today, and in fact, has a son of his own who will be 2 years old in March and guess what? He isn't talking yet either, but he is bright in every other way (loves books, etc) and talking will come in time. Hey, why talk? He gets everything he needs without it - learning to talk is alot of work! Just my opinion/experience, hummer |

I began to talk at an early age, so my parents were distressed when my younger brother did not speak until he was two and a half. When he finally said something, it wasn't the usual "mama" or "dada." His first word was "NO." He knew what it meant, too. The kid turned out okay. He graduated from college when he was only eighteen years old. Never was a big talker, though. ;-) |
