I have a friend who is a retired school teacher who just turned 100 years old. I want to give her a gift that would bring back memories of how restrictive her lifestyle was because she became a school teacher. The more restrictive the codes were, the funnier they will be for her to read. I'm specifically looking for a brief list of 10-20 rules such as: teachers must never sit down while class is in session, or women teachers must never wear dresses that expose their ankles, etc. |

Spotted this floating around - not sure how authentic Teachers' Conduct Teachers today think they have it rough. Take, for example, this entry in a 1915 magazine listing rules of conduct for teachers. 1. You will not marry during the term of your contract. 2. You are not to keep company with men. (Assuming that you're presuming correctly that there were no male teachers.) 3. You must be home between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless attending a school function. 4. You may not loiter downtown in ice cream stores. (Now that's cruel.) 5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have the permission of the chairman of the board. 6. You may not ride in a carriage or automobile with any man unless he is your father or brother. 7. You may not smoke cigarettes. 8. You may not dress in bright colors. 9. You may under no circumstances dye your hair. 10. You must wear at least two petticoats. 11. Your dresses must not be any shorter than two inches above the ankle. 12. To keep the schoolroom neat and clean, you must sweep the floor at least once daily; scrub the floor at least once a week with hot, soapy water; clean the blackboards at least once a day; and start the fire at 7 am so the room will be warm by 8 am. |

fount this too Rules For Teachers - 1872 1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, trim the wicks and clean chimneys. 2. Each morning teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session. 3. Make your pens carefully. You may whittle nibs to the individual taste of the pupils. 4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they attend church regularly. 5. After ten hours in school, the teachers may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or any other good books. 6. Woman teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed. 7. Every teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not became a burden on society. 8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or gets shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intention, integrity and honesty. 9. The teacher who performs his labour faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five pence per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves. |

Dear Bob the Dispatcher, I can't thank you enough for finding the information you provided. I have tried to find this for months but wasn't qualified to edit the search enough to get even close to what you found. Your information thoroughly met my expectations. I don't know how to finalize my query now that you've completed the mission. I've never used this service before and haven't quite got the hang of it yet. I don't want to waste someone else's time now that you've given me what I needed. I hope my comment to you will automatically close my question/account. Thanks again, Becky P.S. Merry Christmas to you and your Family! |
